Flowers are SO expensive!! Ugh! Need advice/semi-vent...

Original post by JimmysBride

I went to see my first florist yesterday and I'm just so aggravated. Everything with this wedding is so much more than I planned to spend. I thought my budgeted amounts were reasonable but everywhere I turn things are way more expensive than I expected! Anyone else experiencing this??? Ok, enough with the venting.

Here's my question: since the centerpieces I want will cost me my first born child, what if I alternate Hi (expensive) and low (read: cheap, perhaps homemade) centerpieces among the tables? This way I'm only paying an arm and leg for the high ones and only a small fortune for the small ones which will hopefully only add up to equal slightly less than one first born child.

Has anyone done this? Would it look cheap and un-uniform? They would have to be totally different CPs since I can't afford to use the same flowers in the low ones....

Ugh. I am so disgusted and frustrated with the wedding industry. I feel like it's not even worth trying to plan a wedding for less $65,000. (and I'm spending WAY less than that) Ah... remember when they used to say weddings average $25K in NY?

I am definitely going to be in the minority here but I think alternating high and lower centerpieces is a unique and very beautiful approach. I have read this suggested by well known florsits as well (have read sooo much wedding material though I cannot recall where I read it, sorry). In fact, I just went to a wedding (out of town, held in a VERY expensive location) where the bride spent several thousand dollars on flowers and did exactly this. She had high centerpieces with candles and then some low centerpices in a beautiful silver vase. The look was beautiful in the room. Of course she also had lights and candles all over the room (hence the cost) but I for one was not offended in the LEAST that I had a low centerpiece at my table, it was beautiful and made me actually go around and take a look at the others. This was one of my best friends and personally I can't imagine feeling slighted by having a low centerpiece at my table. I think brides notice things like this in planning process but not sure guests pay that close of attention as to why they had a low or high centerpiece.... Just my two cents worth....

Friendly piece of advice...if you decide to alternate centerpieces, i.e. expensive and in-expensive be warned. We were at a wedding on friday and they had a beautiful all roses centerpiece on some tables, while others had simple, yet elegant, candles, with rose petals around them. both were beautiful, HOWEVER, at the end of the nights, fights, literally, fights broke out over the roses. Have whatever you want, but please keep in mind everyone wants the nicer centerpiece. Hope this helps, and remember this is JMO

Did you try Burton's in Melville they were very good on there prices, and they do beautiful work. They base there price on what style and quanity not the type of flower!Alot of girls on the board are using them as well. Good luck!

I am having a similiar problem. I like the high center pieces but they cost so much$$$. I have 250 people so i would need around 30 I a guessing. Now I am thinking simple and elegant.I feel as if the flowers are not the MOST important thing. I just was thinking about it tonight because my family and I just went to a beautiful wedding in December and we were discussing about how none of us remembered what the center pieces were. Just to think about.

Flowers by Rosemarie in Sayville. She gave me a quote for 17 tables, all the bridal party flowers, all the family member flowers (no church flowers) for about $1800. The CP's I picked will be $50 each, but she said she usually works in the range of $40 to $85 and she'll work WITH your budget, not TELL you your budget. She's wonderfully creative and very good at individualizing your flowers.

I was wondering if your hall gives centerpieces or you just don't want to use them. I don't know what I would do if my hall didn't provide it..........because really they will stay right on the table and die. The guests won't take them home.

I just wanted to warn those girls who have halls that include centerpieces to make sure you ask what are included in the centerpieces. That doesn't mean anything you want. For instance, one place told me it included one dozen roses in a vase and that was it. Another said it was gerbera daisies and carnations in a bowl. That may be exactly what you were looking for or don't really care too much about the CPs, just don't be shocked later on!

I wish I had that problem b/c I can use my hall CP's but I know that people will be trying to take them home!!

Try Terranova Florist in Baldwin, I believe there are a vendor on the board now. My family has used them in the past for various events and they always did a good job.
