My FMIL will be celebrating the big 60 in November, a few months before the wedding. She did not give us a penny towards the wedding. She is paying for her people and giving us a gift. Fh has 3 brothers and one of them thinks a cruise for 2 will be good, she can bring a friend with her. Fh and I said NO WAY! We have a wedding to pay for and why should we get her a gift that expensive when she has not even helped with anything. Does anyone have any ideas? We thought maybe tickets to a show and dinner. HELP!

Re: FMIL 60th Birthday.....
I would find out how much the cruise is before saying no. Broadway show tickets and dinner could be well over $300 for two people. This may be the portion you and your FH would be expected to pay towards the gift. Or tell you FH's brothers that you can only contribute $x towards the cruise and see if the others are able to swing it.
You could also do a search on google for last minute travel websites (that you book a month or 2 in advance)

My FMIL will celebrate her 60th next year a couple of months after our wedding. Fh was thinking of throwing her a party.
How much were you looking to contribute, the max?

You could also try BJ's Wholesale Club I booked a cruise with them last summer, and I got a great deal. Leaving from NYC, I'm pretty sure you can get a cruise to Canada for around $1k for two people if you really do some research.
Also, be glad that your FMIL is paying for her guests. I would die if my FMIL made an offer like that. She keeps adding guests, and I want to scream!!!

I don't see why her not helping to pay for the wedding affects her birthday gift. (and I would argue she is contributing since she's paying for her guests).
I can understand being on a tight budget because of the wedding expenses, but research it before you say no.

Re: FMIL 60th Birthday.....
Do not get me wrong we are very generous with her presents. I got her onboard credit for a cruise she is taking, but to give 1 ticket would not be bad, but 2 tickets for her and a friend is a lot of money. She does not want to travel to Canada, she is more along the lines of caviar.... she is going to Tahiti(where we r going for our honeymoon) just to go away, this woman has been all around the world and she complains she does not have any money. We are going to try to find out this weekend how much $$ it is going to be. We had to force her to pay for her people, we told her we would not invite any of her friends if she did not contribute. I have no parents left, and he does not have his dad , they are divorced, it was a bitter divorce. Lets put it to you all this way, she went once for us to get something for the wedding and made sure I took out my credit card , for the yarmaulkes...(which are not too expensive) She says since his brother got married in a judges chamber we choose to have a nice wedding, it was OUR choice... yada yada yada. Please do not think of me as a snob I am very generous with gifts.. .. but we are not spending on a friend and her ticket, where she would want to go it is going to be well over 2,000, she has made it clear she does not want a party.
