My fmil keeps telling fh and me that we should return everything on our fortunoff registry and use it to buy our wedding rings. FH is now agreeing with her-- Excuse me, but they are my gifts- not hers and i registered for things i really wanted. FH cannot understand why we should have nice wine glasses, but i think that we should and that my sister bought them for me and i want to keep them. I am so sad that his whole family thinks i am extravagant for wanting to keep the things i registered for

oh my goodness, why would fmil say that? you should definitely NOT return those glasses. Try to keep your patience when telling your fh how you feel.

Re: FMIL and registry
exchange gifts for wedding band credit - that's just nutty! maybe you can just, humor her and then get an 'amazing deal' on the rings and not need to exchange them after all?
btw - just wondering, do you think she collects all her christmas presents every year and exchanges them for the year's supply of everyday items?

Re: FMIL and registry
Fortunoff gives you 10% off your rings when you register there. I was there today looking to buy a gift for someone and to tell you the truth, their mark up on jewelry is sooooo high that you would have to return your registry items, my registry items as well as a maybe a couple of other brides here to get something substantial. You may be better off in the diamond district or a jewelry exchange. Tell your MIL to MYOB and let HER buy the rings for you. Enjoy your gifts!

My FMIL thinks that I am extravagant too! Trust me, it's jealousy! When it comes down to it, you want nice things and definitely keep them. (At least with my FMIL, she dosn't want me to have anicer house than she does) Save some money (we didn't know how we would pay for our rings either) you will use the things off the registry!

Re: FMIL and registry
Thanks guys-- So we went to go look at rings at Tri-county yesterday and i can get both our rings for less than we could get them at fortunoff even using the 10% discount- So i put a deposit on them-- I am definitely not returning my registry items unless I (me, the bride) decide that it is something i dont want. My FMIL is nice, but sometimes feels she can tell me what to do-- I am putting an end to that right now!!!

Re: FMIL and registry
OMG I cannot even believe she suggested that! I'm even more shocked that your FH would even agree to it. That's just sad. Those gifts were purchased for you AND YOUR FI with the intention to be used when you're a married couple.
If it's a money issue, keep in mind that you can always purchase plain gold or silver bands to be used as wedding bands and down the road if you want to, purchase something more expensive. I think your FMIL has lost perspective of what's important here. You don't need a million dollar wedding band to be married. And if, in her opinion you do, let HER buy them for you. But suggesting you return gifts that were purchased for you is just WRONG.
