we are having it in his aunt's extremely large backyard & it is a pretty elaborate set-up. They are having it catered & such, but here's my question:
- How can I convince her to have some type of small favours for our guests? I even offered to take care of it. I think if it is a relatively elaborate party, then there should be favours.... what do you girls think???

I agree with you. Maybe you could offer to do this part on your own. She really can't say no then.

I don't think favors are necessary, but always welcome. I am giving out porceline love-dove trinet boxes

I think you should not ask her, but rather tell her that you and FH will be taking care of the favors for the party- and how excited you are about that! I gave out choc. lollipops with personalized bookmarks from www.favorlady.com I made the choc though. Since a lot of our family and friends are readers it was a cute idea for us. I am not into dust collector favors so I love anything you can eat or use.

I think you should have something to thank everyone for coming. Something simple. Maybe you could do it and just bring them that day. For our e-party we bought those plastic champagne glasses and filled them with hershey kisses and then wrapped them in tulle with personalized ribbons. Simple. But they looked really pretty and everyone complimented them. Just don't tell her if she doesn't think you need them.

Why don't you just say she's doing so much for the party that you'd like to help too and feel tha tyour putting in some work too so she won't be 'overburdened'

Re: FMIL is planning the e-party...
I tried that Olgaki.... didn't work.
I actually didn't want an e-party, we only got engaged 3 months (almost4) ago & are getting married in early January.... I think it's too many parties, but they offered so I said, OK.
BUT.... if I had my way, I would have dome the party differently & it is really stressing me out b/c FMIL keeps forgetting little things like dietary restrictions (my mom is on Chemo & many of my relatives ar vegetarian). I really would have liked to handle the food, b/c if you don't know how vegetarian cuisine is supposed to be prepared, it may be inedible for my guests...ya know.
sorry, just needed a short vent.

Re: FMIL is planning the e-party...
My FMIL is planning a lot of the E-party (but is always asking FI and I for our input). I purchased the favors myself. We are having a Beach-theme party and I found wine glasses filled with a blue gel candle, seashells, and seasalt. I wanted a small party, but it seems to be taking on a mind of its own!

Re: FMIL is planning the e-party...
As far as the favors... Just pick them up and have them there that day - if she is giving you a hard time you don't need to tell her ahead of time. (FMIL had a thousand and one favor suggestions for the wedding that I HATED I just kept blowing her off and when I went shopping with my mom we just picked them out and came home with them, then she couldn't say anything anymore cause it was done with )
With the food, sit her down and explain to her how serious the food selecting is... exaggerate if you have to, she would have to be really stupid to not take note of it.

Re: FMIL is planning the e-party...
IMO you need to TELL her that you and FH have decided together that you want to give hte guests favors.
The reason is this - right now, it may seem great that FMIl wants to do all this and is objecting to you having a favor, but if she feels she has this amount of control / input / influence over what you do, your wedding may end up being all hers.
Edited to add- choose your battles wisely - if this is important, fight for it
