FMIL is the most fab lady but we have such differing views on how this wedding is going to be
As many of you know, my parents have married off my sister and bro and are taking my event with aplomb. FI is first of three and the other two are much younger so she is REALLY into it. She is generous beyond belief and we get along smashingly but her ideas for the space are nutty. Story is I wanted flowerfield type outdoor event but FI won me over with idea of a City Event -- we are a real NYC couple, met, courted here...the whole 9. Anyway, he pushes for a NYC themed event at a cardinally NY venue--very loft like with amazing views. Now the planner has come back with a couple of disctinct ideas -- loads of flowers like a garden of delight, another is a morocccan theme with gilt and sheets, don't ask, and as many of you know, my FMIL is into this whole Enchanted Dreams ideas with scads of flowers and sheer panels on the walls with roving band members playing music. I am so crazed with all of this when my dream would be for a simple low key wedding. Except for my dress, the one indulgence I adore, I have to be candid, there is nothing about my most amazing vendors that I care that much about -- Pics, they are great and will take good pics I have no doubt, same w/ video. Flowers will be outragoues too...it is just I am ntot feeling the vision that everyone else is soexcited about. I want a simple wedding in a friend's backyard with 25 people there -- but I would still like to wear my dress. OK, so that is my dstream of consciousless for tonight after too much champagne.

It sounds like she has nothing but good intentions but the difference between what you want and what she wants is VERY different. Does she know you want a small wedding? I wonder if there is a way to compromise, like having your wedding small and she can decorate that until her hearts content. I dont know but good luck.

FH & I watched 'Father of the Bride' the remake. Your planning is reminding me of this

I'm glad she is Fab! That always helps.
I had two distinct images for my wedding : A midsummer nights dream type thing in a garden with twinkling lights and flowy panels of sheer white material (um - do you i know your MIL?)
and the other was a backyard barbecue/clambake around a pool and with fireworks - a total hippie wedding with daisies in my hair and barefoot.
I ended up with neither. My mother was horrified at the backyard barbecue, having always dreamt of a cinderela wedding for me, and my FH was not into the midsummer nights dream thing.
Can you come to a compromise? How many people are on your guest list?
I have found that delegating certain tasks to my overzealous and sort of ummm...tacky mother that fulfill her idea of an upscale wedding (even though I am doing everything in my power to keep it vineyard casual) sort of allow her think she is getting her way, and peace has reigned. I put her in charge of favors - making them sound EXTREMELY important, and a few other things - helping me pick the menu, bathroom basketys, crap like that. She thinks she is totally involved, and has no clue that I am doing all this leg work to have things my way.
