I just came back from my FH's brother's wedding this weekend. Now i've always known his mother is kinda crazy and can be a big pain! Well after this weekend, I realized how out of control she is, she almost ruined things for the bride and groom with her craziness! How do i control her next year for our wedding without being mean?

Well the short version is she's extremely selfish and needy. She never does anything for herself and expects people to take care of her (she does have some medical issues, and basically uses that to her advantage) But she is completely capable of handling every day things. Yet on the wedding day she had the groom driving around getting her stupid things like wonton soup. And she caused a HUGE scene at the rehearsal dinner that she hosted b/c she wanted to leave early. I felt so bad for the Bride and Groom.

that is very sad!!!! someone needs to put her in her place!!! they need to stop cattering to her as well.
I doubt talking to someone like that is going to work. Like i said, hire a babysitter to watch her all night!

Re: FMIL troubles!
I was kinda joking to my bridesmaids a while ago that their main responsibility was going to be to keep her in check, but after this past weekend...I'm not joking anymore!

Re: FMIL troubles!
my mother in law makes the devil look like a saint. she has gone out of her way to make our engagement a miserable experience. I am sorry you are dealing with this. I wish i had advice but there really isnt much YOU can do. it sort of falls on your FH shoulders and his family to keep her in line. i hope she doesnt cause too much trouble from now untill then.

I've got one of those too.... She is not happy unless everyone is miserable. Her new thing is that she can't walk around because her knee hurts and she has something wrong with her ankle... so she must be waited on hand and foot. Is your FMIL a quest in her own house? Mine is!!!! She throws a party and I do all the work - I'm lucky I get to sit down and eat. I do fear what she is going to do on the day of our wedding but I left it in my FH hands. It's his mother let him deal with her because he doesn't want me to have to.

Re: FMIL troubles!
Just tell her straight out what she is doing. She may be upset, but she cannot control everything. It is your wedding. Just make sure that you do keep her in the loop. FH lost his mom 3 years ago and it makes me upset that we cannot share this with her. Just keep in mind that she is only trying to help and you have to come to a happy medium.

Re: FMIL troubles!
I am so sorry to hear that your FMIL is such a pain.
The important question is....How does your FH react to her antics? Does he cater to her, ignore her, or put a stop to it? As long as he isn't giving into her every whim, then you'll be fine.
Good luck!

Re: FMIL troubles!
My FH basically ignores her. He's put up with her crap for about 30 years, so he just can't deal with her anymore. I told him he has to keep her in line, but it doesnt matter what people tell her...she listens to nobody!
Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll remember to pack duct tape in my bag that day!

Re: FMIL troubles!
I don't know if there is much you can do but on your day just try to relax and don't let her upset you. Always take a deep breath when she does something to annoy you and walk away. Try not to be near her a lot. Try to ignore her in a way if you can. It is your day don't let her ruin it.

Re: FMIL troubles!
All I can think of is the movie Monster in Law. Luckily once my FH moved out of the house FMIL became human again. I have 3 suggestions: 1- Talk to her and set her straight which may make it worse, 2-Kill her with kindness. Sugar her up. The day of or day before. Give her flowers with a nice card telling her how special she is and how lucky you are to have her as a FMIL. Maybe this will work for a while to make her feel special and take the spot light off her needs... 3- Bring the duct tape.!!!!!! GOOD LUCK
