Fondant vs. Buttercream

I'm debating whether to go with fondant or buttercream. I like how some fondant cakes look but I'm concerned about the taste. I've been told it doesn't tast as good as buttercream. I have an idea of what I want my cake to look lke whether buttercream or fondant.

Can someone tell me which one tastes better? Which would you guys go with?

TIA

I'm not sure I've ever actually tasted fondant.
What my friends did was their baker made a 'fake' cake. She put the fondant over cardboard boxes or something to give it shape and only the top layer was actually cake so they could cut it. then they had the real cake with buttercream just in the kitchen ready to go, pre cut and everything, this way the cake was also served much faster.

I love fondant, it tastes awesome and its great looking on a cake, but the Buttercream is beautiful to, its a matter of preference.

When I decorate cakes with fondant I put a layer of buttercream under it. This way if a person does not want to eat teh fondant there is still some buttercream on it.

usually if you do fondant, it will just being on the outer party of the cake, then you can have buttercream on the rest. Mine is a super thin layer of fondant layed over buttecream on the outside and then butter cream filling on the inside. My baker let me taste his fondant, and it was actually pretty good and Im not a big fan of eating fondant!

I asked a lot of people if they like fondant on cakes...they ALL said no. It is so heavy and sweet most people don't like it. I personally do but I have a major sweet tooth. We are going with buttercream bc more people like it better. Also if you take the fondant off there is such a small layer of buttercream underneath it is like eating cake with virtually no icing. it is just a matter of taste

My baker gave us a sample of her white and chocolate fondant. She makes hers from scratch and it tasted very good. I've tasted some bad fondants though, so if you are going with the full fondant cover I'd def. ask to taste what they use.

We went with buttercream and a fondant ribbon to accent the base of each tier. If people want to eat it they can if not they can leave it on the plate.

Beware...fondant is often considered an upgrade!

Anyway, I am having the same problem, I hate fondant so we are either doing all buttercream or a fake cake

i dont like icing period lol. I was very concerned with the look of the cake so i went with fondant. Like many have mentioned before, many bakeries buy from an outside place the fondant which tastes bad. Some bakers now have been making their own fondant to make it taste better and then a few people use rice krispies treats to mold the cake.

I am a person who hates all icing, and ill say that i ALWAYS eat the cake regardless lol. Its only one small side that has the icing and i usually eat all of it but the icing, its simple lol since most of the cake served is the inside of it.

Go with what you like best. And if you like fondant but not the taste, you can always have the baker serve sheet cake to your guests without fondant on it.

ETA: im also having viennese so people have many other sweets to choose from

Fondant doesnt taste BAD, just not the same as buttercream. You can have fondant flavored if you like- just ask your bakery.

It depends on the look of the cake you're going for though, you can't get the same out of them since they're so different in texture.

If you need the look of the fondant, just keep in mind that the cake should always have a layer of buttercream under the fondant so that it is smooth- so anyone that doesnt like the fondant can just peel it off!

Fondant tastes like cardboard, but it's gorgeous bc the texture is purely smooth... we went with buttercream and it was absolutely delish!!!

they usualy put a thin layer of buttercream under the fondant and people just push off the fondant. I have tasted it and it doesnt taste good to me. I have never seen anyone actually eat the fondant so idk how others feel about it.
