I've been trying to find what is the right way to do it. Maybe there isn't a 'right way' but are you supposed to use the same font style for the inner and outer envelope of the invite?

I presume so.... unless you want a more frilly version of the outer envelope font on the inner envelope.... (don't go WAY TOO frilly on the outer envelope becuase things could get misdelivered )

I would suggest using the same on both envelopes. If possible, it should coordinate (or even be an exact match) to the lettering from your invitations if you used a script.

Yes, we used the same font and size for the inner and the outer envelope.
