Food Tasting

Food Tasting

Yesterday my fiance and I attended a food tasting at The Woodlands, in Woodbury for our upcoming Engagement Party. I thought it would be just the two of us sitting with the lady we booked our party with and tasting one or two entrees and the cake options. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong.

We arrived a little before 7pm and was greeted by the receptionist who told us the tasting would being shortly. We sat by a fire places and waited with the rest of the people attending the tasting.

At 7pm we were brought into the mock cocktail hour in the main dining room. There were cocktail tables set up with tea lights and a table in the middle of the room had all of the cold antipasto things they serve during cocktail hour. Our waiter took our drink order and brought it to our table. They also had a bar that you could go up to and order yourself. It was a full bar, which I was surprised to see. They were even serving what they called 'Signature Cocktails' with pretty flower garnishes. You choose your own and customize it.
After we helped ourselves to the cold table, waiters were walking around with hot appetizers. We LOVED the prosciutto wrapped asparagus and the thai tasting spoons. The crab cakes were the only passed appetizer we didn't really care for, no flavor.

After that we were brought into another room that had a table set up for just the two of us with our names on it.
They brought us 4 different appetizers to try. The pear salad didn't have enough dressing on it but my fiance really liked it. I liked the beet and feta salad. I don't know if I would choose that for all of my guests but it tasted really good! They also had a heart shaped watermelon salad with feta over greens that was a nice presentation.
When we finished tasting all of those they brought over the main coarse. They gave us 5 choices. And they were all FULL portions. I couldn't believe how much food there was. I will definitely be having the Chilean sea bass on our menu. It was served with a lobster sauce that tasted just like lobster bisque. It was nice and creamy. SO YUMMY!
There were two chicken dishes. One was crusted and served over polenta and the other was roasted and had an olive tapenade on it. We both like the crusted version. The roasted was a little dry. They also served a filet mignon. I don't eat red meat but my fiance said it was juicy and had nice flavor. The 5th dish was red snapper but we didn't try it because we both don't like that fish.

As if that wasn't enough food, they then brought us a tasting plate for dessert with small cakes on it. There was apple, chocolate molton and a cheesecake. I liked all three but my fiance wasn't a fan of the apple. We also tried a fruit tart that was excellent. We thought the evening was over until they brought out MORE dessert! It was such a cute presentation. There were small cut outs of chocolate, red velvet and white sponge cake on one plate and then about 8 different filling and frosting options on another. We got to try all of the different combinations but still can't decide. They were all sooo good!
Other highlights were that they showed us a table set up the way it would be for the party. Set with the linens, plates and glasses. Very elegant.

Pros:
-The staff was amazing. So attentive! Also, managers were walking around the tasting the entire night. I think Tommy was the general manager. He really seemed genuine and concerned with our thoughts on the food.
-We LOVED almost everything we tasted! The only thing we both agreed that we didn't like were the crab cakes and the roasted chicken.

Cons:
-The room was freezing! I hope they will put the heat on for our party.
-I wish the golf course had more lighting so you could see the greens from the party room.
-The bathrooms are kind of far from the main room.

I am now really excited for our upcoming party and hope everything will be as good as it was for the tasting. Our wedding isn't until 2012 so we haven't decided on our venue yet. We are condisering the Woodlands, the Chateau Briand and the Fox Hollow (we like that they have the hotel right there).
