Since I'm going to try BF, do I still have to avoid certain foods after the baby comes? I am DYING for a bologna and cheese sandwich. I haven't had 1 since I've been PG, so I'm really, really craving it. I know I have to limit beer, etc., but I'm more concerned with the food!

You could also make a food journal so that you what foods you ate when. Some foods may make the baby gassy *broccoli, etc*

Re: Foods after the baby...
There is probably a list somewhere on line or in the infant care books. I didnt bf but I remember some Moms telling me that they had to avoid things like chocolate which surprised me.

anything with caffine may affect the baby. But each baby is different. I do avoid overly gassy foods since I don't want to take a chance. But I have had a few pieces of choclate, although I do not drink caffinateed drinks.

Melissa buy the book WHAT TO EAT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING
I started reading it when TTC b/c there is a chapter on that, what to eat when TTC and oN what to eat while pregnant and a chapter on what to eat while breastfeeding and even while preparing for number 2 child
basically I think it said you can eat more of what you had to avoid while preggo when breastfeeding but I only skimmed that chapter Im almost positive it said you can lower your servings by one like have 3 protein instead of 4-5 but still need some extra calories but your allowed more caffeine unlike when your preggo and an occassional drink thats all I remember but I like the book, im still reading it

Re: Foods after the baby...
When you are BFing, your diet should mainly consist of as many whole foods as possible - and VERY little of processed/pre-packaged foods and drinks. You should drink plenty of natural fluids - fruit nectars (not the same as juices; nectars are more natural); tons of water and yes, avoid caffiene.

I know they say garlic can upset a BF baby, but it depends on the baby!

I have also heard that some babies can't tolerate the taste of garlic, but you can experiment in small doses with your little one. I agree with Anna though - everything in moderation!!

I love garlic and Damien doesn't mind at all
The only food I haven't tried yet is broccoli. Everything else no problem
