Anyone taking Metformin? My BFF (also one of my BMs) is just beginning metformin for PCOS. She does NOT have diabetes. She is concerned because her pharmacist told her she cannot drink while on this medicine, but her doctor never mentioned it.
Anyone know about this?

Re: For Girls w/PCOS
I am currently on Metformin as well as Byetta- I am a borderline diabetic and have been taking both for several months now two times a day.
You can't drink while on Metformin at all... also one of the side effects is that it makes you nauseated at least until you get used to being on the drug. Also another side effect of Metformin is that it can cause loose bowel movements as well. Byetta does the same thing (side effect wise) and also suppresses your appetite as well so some doctors have started to use it for weight loss.
My doctor didn't mention that I can't drink while on Metformin- but I did know that after looking the drug up online before taking it. He did mention the side effect of the nauseated feeling though and also can be sending you to the bathroom for loose bowel movements as well.

Her doctor actually just called her back and said she can drink in moderation. He said the people who are at risk of lactic acidosis while on metformin are those with kidney and liver problems and they are the ones who the warning is directed at. He still said she should skip her dose the day before if she knows she will be drinking the next day, and she should do so in moderation while eating to be safe.

Re: For Girls w/PCOS
Drinking must not be that big of a deal. I have PCOS and I'm actually looking at my metformin bottle. There is no warning to NOT drink when taking it.
It only says take with food and do not chew or crush. She will get very naseous (can't spell) in the beginning. Hopefully her dr knows to start her off slow. I started with 500 mgs and it took a year to get up to the max (2000).
Once the meds kick in she'll experience weight loss and her body will become more 'regular'. (If either or both of those are her problems)

That's exactly what I do- if I know I am going to a party I won't take it a day or two before the party.. mainly my doctor said no to me I think because it's the sugar he's concerned about. When it came to the wedding I just had diet sodas and didn't really drink (only the champange toast) and when we left the next day on the HM I didn't take the meds with me and I was fine...just watched what I ate carefully due to the sugar intake. And yes you have to take Metformin with food..I find if I just take it w/o eating I'm more likely to get nauseated.. also I didn't mention that I'm on 500mg 2x per day.

Don't have PCOS but to my knowledge anyone who has taken Metformin has had to take another medication to counteract the side effects. Ask your friend to talk to her Dr about this. I mean I could be totally wrong but it couldn't hurt to ask.

I had asked my doctor when I started Metformin and he said that the body has to adjust (over months) to the medication- as you adjust the side effects (nausea, bowel movents, etc.) should subside.

I have PCOS and I've been on BC for about 10 years.. but have never taken Metformin.
Are any of you girls scared about not being able to conceive? Now that I am on the verge of getting married, I'm really concerned.

I take Metformin for diabetes, but I've never experienced any side effects which is strange, because I do get side effects with just about everything else!!! Mary MOB

I'm very worried about not being able to conceive. FH and I decided that if it doesn't happen naturally after 6 months we would go for fertility. If that doesn't work he said we can adopt.

We've actually decided to do the same. We won't start trying for a few years, but if we don't get pregnant after 6-12 months, we will definitely go for fertility. I guess you really don't know until you try.. Some people get lucky!

Re: For Girls w/PCOS
I have PCOS but I just take the pill to regulate my period. My obgyn told me that I don't have to take metformin until I want to try to have kids. As for those on here that are nervous about being able to conceive, I used to be really freaked out, but I know a bunch of women who have PCOS and all have been able to conceive naturally. So stay positive.
P.S. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with PCOS on here, I know it's strange to say, but nice that I can talk about it with you ladies!

That's pretty much what my gyno told me too. We actually have a few options besides Metformin. Thank God!
I totally agree! I don't know anyone with it, so it's comforting to know that I'm not the only one!

Re: For Girls w/PCOS
Wow, its crazy that so many of us have PCOS, it is very scary.
I can not take BC b/c i have the gene of having a blod clot, i recommend everyone asking your gyn to take a blood test before taking a BC b/c it is very dangerous.
I was on metformin for about 4 months and could not take it, i felt sick and just did not feel myself.
The worst, is weight control, i can exercise, diet and do everything and it is so hard to loss weight, anyone else having this problem?

I'm right there with you girls.
I have PCOS along with a few other things- and have actually ASKED to be put on metformin and was told that it wouldn't help me. I am going to an RE on Monday, actually, so wish me luck!
