For Kathy116--My Orchids

Kathy here are the orchids I am working on. Hopefully I don't kill them.

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

You won't kill them...indirect light (well, right now that it's winter, I have mine in direct light for a good part of the day...once the seasons change, and the days get longer, I will move them to indirect light).

If you see brown spots, like sunburn on the leaves, they are getting too much light...but they def. need light...not shade.

Water them once a week (they like to dry out in between).

You will have an addiction to orchids, once you start, you can stop (at least I can't!)

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

I notice brown marks on my white one when I took the pictures a few minutes ago. I have to move it. Evidently it is getting too much light. Thanks for the tip.

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

Well, you just bought them, and some brown marks are normal...I would keep them where they are for now...Phalenopsis is a pretty hardy plant.

OK, so I'm butting in too But I just LOVE orchids.

I am still a novice. I currently have 2 orchids. 1 in my apt. (purchased last year) and 1 in my offc (purchased a couple of weeks ago). I have had that happen with a previous one and the one I just bought. It's almost like the plant went into shock when the location was changed. But neither plant has died because of it.

Is anyone going to the orchid show in nyc? It starts Friday and lasts until March 27th. I think that I am going to 'drag' my mom to it.

How often do you water?
What's the temp in that room?
Where are they located...what type of light source?
COuld be many many things...
I'm curious about the above questions.
Do you fertilize ever?

I totally want to go to the show! Do you have any info?

Where did you change the location to? I try to leave my plants alone, but I do change the location when the days are shorter, my plants seen to thrive in direct light in the winter...but depends on the species of orchid.

I also fertilize mine once or twice a month...but not a necessity at all.

how often do you water, etc,?
Be sure not to overwater, you'll rot the roots.

What kind of orchids do you have?
Did you expose them to the cold?

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

Some leaves will turn brown and fall off, this is totally normal...but the buds should not turn brown before opening...however, maybe something happened to the plant that caused a shock.

Do you see any new growth?
I've been annoyed with two plants (if you can get annoyed at a plant, I am) Cattelyas...I've had them two years and not a darn bud...however, I am getting new leaves, and I see new growth...so I'm not giving up on them, sometimes it takes a bit longer to find the optimal conditions for a particular variety.

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

My plants are phaleanopsis.

I bought the plant in my apt at BJs close to Mother's Day. It was amazing. It had 15 blooms on it when I purchased it with many healthy looking buds. At it's peak it had 25 blooms at one time!

Over the past year the leaves have been growing in number and in size. Sometime in January I noticed that it was sending up a shoot. It now has 5 blooms and 6 buds. 2 look like they will be opening soon.

So I think that this plant loves its location. I do feed it but I haven't gotten into the habit of doing it at regular intervals. My apartment also can get very dry so I sometimes water it more than once a week.

Re: For Kathy116--My Orchids

I had them in the den which tends to be on the cool side and they where in a well lit area but not to much direct light. I moved them into the living room b/c its a little warmer there. I thought that would help. I water them about once a week. I have never given them anything else. I don't want them to die. I have had them for about 2 years.
