For Nina, re: co-sleeper

Hi Nina!! How are you feeling??

I wanted to answer your question about the co-sleeper, but I decided to make it a separate thread instead of answering within Anna' thread about John Anthony's crib...I hope you don't mind! Maybe you'll get other opinions this way!

We did not use a co-sleeper b/c I didn't really understand the benefit of the thing. In my personal opinion, it's just like a Pack-n-Play, with one side that folds down. It's a waste of money IMO, b/c it does not save you from getting out of bed in the middle of the night. Keep in mind that no matter how many times the baby wakes up to eat, you will have change the baby's diaper also. Add to that the fact that most breastfed babies poop while they are nursing (sometimes several times in one feeding), so there's no way that you can save yourself from getting out of that warm and cozy bed during the night. So, what's the point of the co-sleeper? The baby is just as close to you in a bassinet or crib in your room.

We used a portable crib in our bedroom. It worked great for us b/c it was small enough to fit in the corner by my side of the bed, and still be big enough for Paul to use until now (he's almost 9 months old). We set up our changing station in another room, so that when I got up to feed him in the middle of the night, I didn't end up waking DH.

JMO...when it comes to baby stuff, I tend to be as minimalist as possible. I prefer to do without certain things that others deem 'must have' items. You really need to determine what your style is, and what will make you most comfortable.

Thanks Claud-I agree about needing fewer things than are out there and keeping the stuff at a minimum that's what I'd like to do and one of the reasons I don't want a bassinet (although they are very cute). I have't seen the co-sleeper in person, just online, but I'm wondering if it's the same price as a pack-n-play, if it replaces the functions of a pack-n-play (moving it from room to room, take on trips, use as a play pen).

I didnt even think about changing the diaper in the middle of the night, just about feeding, so you're right, I would still have to get up. Personally, I do think there are benefits of co-sleeping but it's not only about not having to get up, it's more about the bonding and comfort for the baby. So, what you wrote clarifies for me that if I do get it, the main reason I will is for the actual co-sleeping, not for the night feedings.

Since you had the portable crib, do you also have a regular crib?
