for the bassinet and crib users. BTDT Question

I am going to try to start Sophia sleeping in her crib at night. I may attempt the bassinet, we'll see, but either way the question is the same.

When we go to bed, I nurse her and she falls asleep. what I would like to start doing, is take her sleeping and put her in the crib. She wakes up around every three hours still. Do you get up the second she starts to stir? Or do you wait until she's crying? (I have never done this - in bed, she starts to kind of grope around and I am right there and just stick a boob in! ) - Either way we'll be in the same room. If I do the crib, I'll sleep in the nursery in the beginning. And the bassinet is in our bedroom. So I think I'll hear the beginning stirrings and grunts, etc. I just don't know if you are supposed to wait for the 'worked up' wake-up call. And then I nurse her and wait for her to fall asleep and put her back to bed?

Re: for the bassinet and crib users. BTDT Question

It was really difficult for me not to get her right away when she was sleeping in the cradle in my room. I think that because the milk supply was so close - she was always wanting it. When we put her in her own room, however, it was much easier for me to let her stir a little bit before I went to her. Sometimes she is really not getting up - she is just moving around. I usually wait until she starts to cry and then go get her.

Now I am no expert - Jordan started sleeping in her own bed by accident. She was waking up around every 2 hours and one night my DH was walking her around to get her to sleep and decided to put her in her bed(in her room). She slept all night. I couldnt really argue with that. She was about 7 weeks old and it was much sooner than I would have moved her out of our room, but she just slept so much better (and so did we!)

Re: for the bassinet and crib users. BTDT Question

Molly has been in her bassinet since day 1- although I do put her in bed with me when she gets up around 5:30-6:30 most mornings. I just like the cuddle time

I put her in the bassinet after her 9:30 bottle. Sometimes she is awake, often she is sleeping. I let her talk herself to sleep, but I don't have her crying. At night when she stirs I leave her for a bit. Molly is not a real cryer (lucky me) so if she is crying then I have waited way too long. Usually she moves around a bit, and sorta does a 'call' to me but it isn't a cry. If she does the 'call' then I get up. If she is just stirring a bit, I see if she is going to go back to sleep.

Do you ever sleep in your own bed Jenny? That is something that I think you may want to start to do. You can try the bassinet and see how it works. You will have to get up to nurse, of course. But you and your DH need to be in your bed together. It is important to still feel like a couple, not just parents IMO.

I always let her cry for a minute or so just to see if she really needs me. Usually she will go back to sleep on her own.

Connor sleeps in his cradle in our room. I put him down after nursing him to sleep and he typically sleeps for 2 - 3 hours at a stretch at night. I sleep with earplugs so I only wake for his crying- when he is ready to eat again, and not the regular grunts, yelps, gurgles. Unlike Molly, Connor is a major cryer, but if he is crying at night that means he is hungry.

Emily is in her crib in her room now and usually I will wait to hear a cry before I go in - sometimes she stirs but goes back to sleep.
When she was in the bassinet in our room - I used to get her the second she made a sound, because I couldn't fall back asleep anyway once she made a peep.

Re: for the bassinet and crib users. BTDT Question

Rebecca is not a big crier, so I also would go to her if she was crying. If she's just stirring, I would be awake, and ready to go, but I wouldn't go until I heard a cry, no matter how little the cry. Then I would go to her. I know they say that the babies should learn how to get themselves back to sleep, but I hate the thought of her crying and thinking that she is alone, and no mommy to come help her. So, I go to her. I don't usually pick her up anymore when I go, however. I might just give her a pacifier, or pat her back, or just walk in and by the time she sees me, she is ready to go back to sleep. Maybe I'm spoiling her, but she only wakes up maybe once during the night anyway for a few seconds, so I can deal with that.

Re: for the bassinet and crib users. BTDT Question

I had julianne in a bassinet by my side of the bed for the first month. would put her in there at night when she fell asleep...but then every few hours (seemed like minutes to me) she would fuss around in the bassinet . I would wait until it was an actual cry.
There were times she would play around in there- scoot around..and also run her finegers across the liner of the bassinette.

The first night we put her in her crib she slept 12 hours straight!!!'

Jen, that is when you put the monitor in the nursery...and wake/go to her once she is crying for a prelonged time. I say that cuz J would cry or fuss a bit until she moved into a more comfortable position and then she would settle down again.
