One of our biggest stresses about getting married is we want to buy a place to live and not rent. We have been starting to look at Co-Ops and Condos in Astoria and Flushing where he and I both live because we want to both be close to home. However, 3 bedrooms are going for almost $400,000 and usually with that price you have to put down at least $70,000 when you buy. Think of how those prices will go up over the next year and be so expensive next year when we really have to consider buying. How are you guys saving $ to buy a home?

Re: For those 09' Girls that don't live with FH...
We are actually opening up a savings account this weekend. We are going to put a minimum amount in each month and if we have extra we can put it in, but we cant put any less than our agreed upon amount and we cant take anything out!
Its so crazy how much houses cost! FH does mortgages and people are doing 100% financing and 40 year mortgages now
Hopefully the housing market falls and we can get a cheap house!!! We are going to try and buy a foreclosure.

Re: For those 09' Girls that don't live with FH...
Well when Fh comes home from Japan in July of 2008 we will be moving in together to his house. His parents just re-did the apartment that they have on the second floor of their house. It is nice- has its own deck and own entrance...and the best part is we are getting it for free (internet, cable, electric) cause FIL's know we will be saving for a wedding and a home of our own.
So we are hoping to have the $ for the wedding (have a joint account we put a certain amount of $ in every paycheck) saved up by the time he comes home from Japan. We will then have 9 months until our wedding from when he comes home. For those 9 months we will then start saving for a house. But after we get married we might have to live in the apartment in FIL's house for at most a year until we can afford a house. And by then hopefully FH will be accepted into the Suffolk County Police Dept. (He takes the test this June)!!
But it is sooo expensive to livehere on LI I dont know if we will be able to afford it if FH isnt a Suffolk Cop lol

That is so awesome that you can do that! You are going to be able to save sooooo much! Congratulations! I am very happy for you! We have a joint savings too that we have a good amount of $ in already but not enough to buy anything. We are hoping to make a lot from the wedding but we would have to buy the place before the wedding. It would just kill me to rent though bc I would feel as if I am throwing money away. I'm sure he will be accepted into the Police Dept. Living is too expensive though!

That's a good idea. We have a joint savings that we opened when we had our engagement party because we knew we would get $ but we haven't really put much money in since. I should tell him we should eahc put a certain amount in a month. Thank you for the idea!!! I too hope the prices of homes go down!

Oh Thank You Nicole! Yeah being able to live in the apt in FIL's house will be great for saving hopefully mucho $$. lol
But I know exactly what you mean- we dont want to rent cause we would rather spend our money buying something that is OURS!!
But yes I definitely suggest putting some money in every paycheck into your account. We opened an account about 2 years ago (like 5 months after we started dating) cause we knew we would be together and marry eachother- I have known him for 11 years before we even started dating lol
But we have almost 7,000$ saved up from it...and I mean thta isnt even 1/2 of what the wedding will cost but we still have till July of 2008 to save the rest- and hopefully our e-party in June will be some more $$ hehe
Good Luck!

Re: For those 09' Girls that don't live with FH...
I opened a joint account for us with ING direct, and they take a set amount out of my bank account and transfer it to that account on a regular basis. (you set the amount and how often you want it transferred- i do every other week since thats how I get paid) and it is earning like a 4% interest rate (totally bigger than either of our regular savings accounts). We are using that account to pay for the wedding. I am setting up a second ING account to help us save for a house. We were looking ot buy one very soon then realized that if we could talk FH's grandparents into letting us have the basement apartment for like 2 years, we could save so much more money and do alot better.... So now we have to chat with them!
