So I am the only child my father has [I have a half sister from my mother's second marriage] and had/have a really bizarre last name. After years of teasing, I am THRILLED to be rid of it. I've always known I would change my name [when I got married], even before I was teased for it. My dad and I got into an 'argument' over changing my name several months back. He felt I should keep it...I think in part because I'm his only child, he had sisters who didn't pass the name on obviously and I think he thought I somehow would carry on th ename. He was pretty adamant about me keeping it...I was pretty adament about changing it.
Anyway, I know it's hard for dads to see their babies grow up and move away...but is anyone's dad sad about the name change? I thought it was odd. I also needed him to get me a new birth certificate [he lives near where I was born] for a variety of purposes. One being the whole name change bit and gettign a passport. I was genuinely afraid he'd say no! [since he doesn't want me to change it]
oddly, he sent it to my new name, which made me feel good...and a little sad. i don't know why...maybe because i realized why he wanted me to keep it.

Re: For those changing their [last] names...DAD ?
I don't think my dad felt sad, although I haven't changed it yet, so maybe thats why. He did ask me after the wedding what my name was going to be, so maybe that was his way of expressing his feelings. I have a brother though, and three boy cousins who will carry on the name, so I guess he wouldn't think of our name ending if I didn't take it. I think dads are just sad about 'losing' their little girls in general.

i'm sorry that you and your father had words over the name change thing... but i completely understand.
your name IS WHO YOU ARE. and to suddenly change it, is almost like forgetting your past. it's very sad. i have a VERY COMMON last name and haven't really cared for it. but it's MINE!!!
so i understand feeling happy that he's coming around and sad that you're letting go of a part of you.

I am sorry you have to feel awkward about something you were excited about initially... but I understand your dad's sadness. He'll get over it though. sometimes people just need time to process the new information and changes. My dad knows our last name willprobably die out. too My brother has 3 girls!!! I don't know if he'll try again for the fourth & even if he does no guarantees! So my dad has joked around about my keeping the last name, but he's old fashioned so he knows I will take my fiance's last name.
For me its a little bit sad b/c I feel i am giving up a bit of my parents cultural background & my cultural identity as a Greek-American... but its just a name! so its going to be ok.

My dad passed away 5 years ago. He knew that I would be pursuing my PhD (got a little delayed) and was tickled that there would a 'Dr. S*******.'
I am the one who is a little sad about changing my name. I brought up the subject of keeping it... so that my dad could have his Dr. in the family.. but FH was adament about me changing it.
My kids are hyphenated.. and I will be hyphenating as well though.

I'm sorry you're father is having a hard time with the name change. I'm sure he will come around (sounds like he is) to honor your wishes!
It would be difficult to compare this to my family, where I have two brothers who are already married, and my father already has one grandson.
I come from a 100% Irish family. My FH looks as Irish as I do (he's got red hair, too)... He's 1/4 Irish, 1/4 Italian and two other things (German and Scotch??) that escape me at the moment. The red hair, however, comes from the Italian side of his family, actually... but it still shocks people when they hear his VERY Italian, 5-syllable last name. My Irish family will have a field day with that one (Well, once they learn how to spell and pronounce it!)
I DO plan on changing my name, and I'm really looking forward to doing that - No problem with my current last name, but I want to have the same last name as my husband. When people see us together (me with freckles and him with red hair) and then hear the last name, I think it'll be pretty darn funny!

I'm not all that sad...I just think when I saw the envelope, I realized what he was feeling. We think of our dads as invincable creatures...they have gushy mushy hearts, too. I guess it's a sign he's accepted it and that's good.
Silly dads...

that is funny. my DH is half italian, but his mom is the italian one...i had NO CLUE he was the slightest bit italian until someone [also italian] said something about it. in retrospect, he looks it to an extent...but his last name is so 'white bread' it might as well be smith or jones! when he tells people he's italian, they don't believe him either!

I don't think my dad cares much..if he does he doesn't show it. I care though...it kind of makes me sad that my sister and I are the last generation. My dad had 3 sisters, my grandfather had 3 sisters....no boys in this family. I've talked to FH about keeping my name and he is totally against it. I may hyphenate...even though it doesn't carry on to my children.

Re: For those changing their [last] names...DAD ?
I don't think my father is....however my best friend is engaged, and he wants one of his daughters to keep the name, b/c everyone had girls so there is no one to carry on the name and they don't want their legacy persay to end
I have two brothers so it dosen't apply to me. But I do have to say that I am not a fan of this 'tradition' FH insists on me changing my last name. Why dosen't he change his? He has 2 brothers?
I have been me my entire life, I have made all the wedding plans, I will probably do most in the stuff marriage like pushing out children, breast feeding, cleaning, cooking, laundry. FH does what he has to and he goes to work. The 50's are over and were over-rated!!!
