For those formula feeding...

Do you buy powder or ready-made ?

If powder, do you:
*Prepare it and put in one big bottle/container so that you have it 'ready made' and just pour into bottle for feedings.
or
*Do you make it directly in the bottle itself and store the bottles in the fridge ?
Ive been doing it this way, but decided i'm going to buy a big rubbermaid bottle and make it in there. (maybe make it in an Avent bottle for measuring purposes and pour into there to have ready for the next day or so.

My MIL tells me (especially when i'm on the go) to just always have bottled water handy (room temp) and make it whenever he's hungry. Why bother making/refrigerating/heating it. I just find it comes out much better with water thats just been boiled, and 'hot' (I let it sit for a good 20 min first).

Other tips or ideas ?

Anna,

we use powder.
In the beginning we would fill up a big rubbermaid bottle with formula, refrigerate and use as needed. Now that Geno is only taking up to 24oz a day we just prepare each bottle as need. Since he's on table foods I dont boil the water anymore, just fill up the rubbermaid and leave it on the counter. We use bottle water only when we are out. We keep a container of powder and fill bottles as needed. We try to make sure that everything is room temp. Here is a link to container we have to keep powder formula in when we are on the go. I love it!! You have to scroll down a bit, it has 3 sections - Powdered Formula Dispenser

My MIL was looking for that same thing at BabiesRUs the other day. And found a really huge one. I can buy it online now. Thanks !

I make each bottle for Luke as he's ready to eat. He has 6 oz of formula in a feeding so I put 3 1/2 oz of cold water from the Brita in the fridge and 2 1/2 oz. of boiled water. Add 3 scoops of formula and shake. It's so much faster and easier than premixing it and heating the bottles up. When out and about with him, I also have one of those containers with the 3 compartments. I just premeasure it beforehand and then just pour it into the water. If I think he will be due for the bottle within an hour or 1 1/2 hours of going out, I will fill the bottle with 6 oz of boiling water and then by the time he's ready to eat, it's cooled down enough to just add the powder and feed. I also have a bottle holder that is insulated to keep it warm which helps. I rarely bring a mixed bottle along - unless he's going to eat the second we get somewhere and only if that place is close. I refuse to give him premixed stuff that has been at room temperature too long - past a half hour. I rather make it on the spot, even from tap water if I absolutely have to. HTH

Re: For those formula feeding...

I use Ready to Feed. We buy the quart sizes in bulk at BRU - usually 3 cases at a time.

But when Paul was first born, we used the powdered formula, as recommended by our infant care class. I always made at least 1 quart of formula at a time and kept it in the fridge. But, I just about drove myself crazy with the boiling water/mixing crap, so I gave it up. I could NOT stand the residue that the powder left behind and it made on-the-go situations very difficult. I felt like no matter what I did, I always ended up re-mixing or making a huge mess. Plus, I really think that Paul was gassier on the powder than he is with the RTF.

DH and I figured out that while the Ready To Feed is more $$$, it is more worth it not to have the hassle of boiling the water and mixing, etc.
When we are on the go, I carry the 8oz. cans of RTF - it's so easy and they can be kept at room temp.
