for those not having T-giving at your house...how do you burgler proof?

as a kid, a house down the street from us was broken into and the dog was a yappy one...and killed on T-giving - so my parents always left lights, tvs and radios on when we went out for a day

well someone in my complex's golf clubs were stolen this week...and the pet sitter sent a letter around saying that she could rotate our lights to deter burglers...

then last night I had a nightmare about burglers...

since T-giving is a day that people are known to be out...I thought I'd get some ideas from you...

1. I leave the TV on in our bedroom...since we do this every night anyway...
2. I leave the hall light on...since our cat needs it to get to her litter box (at the room at the end of the hall
3. I want to leave the living room light and TV on...but in the middle of the night will it look suspicious??? Although I was uptp 4:30 watching TV and scrapping a few nights ago...

what do you do?

I would say do all of the following EXCEPT the LR light....
It is believable that you would be up at 4am watching TV, but would you be up at 4am with all the lights on?

This is a good thing to think about though....

reading this made me think of when I was a little girl I made my parents put my gabbage patch dolls (all of them) in the attic so if someone broke into the house they wouldnt take them

If you were just going to be gone for the day, I could see leaving the TV, etc on. But ALL weekend? If they're watching your house, they'll figure it out.

maybe get one of those auto timer things. So lights and TVs go on and off.

Our neighbor/landlord will be around. (two apartments in the same house) so there will be signs of life.

we're in an apt complex - aside from locking the windows and door, there's nothing else we need to do....no one can see if our lights are on from the hallway so we don't have to worry. I guess it's one of the perks of an apt!

My mom's used the timers for her outdoor light as well as LR.

We used timers (but im home this time)

Also.. it sounds silly but don't forget:

1. Double check all windows are locked shades closed and curtains drawn. (mine are this way all through the day, but try not to make your house look 'locked up')

2. Tell neighbors where you will be in case they see anything suspicious.

3. If you have a near by friend who can just drive-by or who may be in your area anyhow, have them take a quick glance. (Our family used to do 'stop bys' where they'd actually park a car there.

This is all for a one day away thing if you're really worried.

Theives realize this is the prime time.. people away from home and so forth.. but they also want it quick and easy. If it doesnt look like an easy hit, they'll go find another that is.

I would use timers...and for you apt folk- how about timers on a RADIO?
Robs mom puts a radio all the time...

the best are timers that stagger the time they turn things on and off

I'm in an apt...but on the first floor...AND my 'backyard' is secluded -- I guess the only good thing is that there is a little spot where people like to walk their dogs...

man do I need to get renters insurance!!!!

I leave the blinds OPEN in the living room and the lights on so my BIG BLACK DOG is VISABLE to everyone!

I also leave on the disney channel for her anyway..

I leave the kitchen light on, and I leave the basement lights on. (looks like a basement apartment then) and i leave the car in the driveway!

Lights on timers, and motion sensor lights on the front porch that come on when someone pulls in the driveway. If we're away for a longer period of time we tell the neighbors, and our uncle who lives a mile away stops by and walks around the yard occasionally. We may put the TV on timers too, or a radio.

Oh - and stop the mail and newspaper, or have someone pick it up.

you should put the living room light on a timer...
and have a bedroom lamp on a timer too..
