For those of us dealing with difficult family members...

Whether it be ours or FH's family, have any of you tried to calmly confront these people? If so, did it change for the better, or worse?? Thanks!

im very passive so i haven't had the guts to do it myself...but I did have FH say something since it was his family member. things seem to have gotten better for now.

FH has spoken to his mom regarding a few issues and some things def seem to be better. I wouldn't have approached her myself because then it would get blown into me trying to boss her around, but it def worked with him. I think whosever family it is should try to say something first, it seemed to work better that way for me.

I've totally had to put FH's mom in her place ... she was being ridiculous on more than one occassion and i told her.

best example:

she told me that she was upset that we're not suddenly super-close because when you are planning a wedding, that's the time to become close with your family ... i literally laughed in her face saying that if they want to be close with us, then they didn't have to wait for our engagement

edit: note that i don't confront EVERYTHING though ... some things should just be ignored (or repressed )

Of course! I've tried explaining nicely and calm to yelling and being furious. It doesn't matter nothing works, bc its ALWAYS ABOUT FMIL, never about how she affects people, only how horrible we are to her.

Whatever, normally, I would just let it go, but I won't have her walk all over me.

Yes - my MIL was upset b/c I called the place she had picked out for the RD 'trashy' and then sent her an email with some suggestions that said 'here are some places that are a little less rowdy.'

So I called her and explained that I didn't mean to offend her and it's all good now.

Nip it in the bud! Don't let it fester!

definitely NOT. confronting fh's family is always the WORST idea, no matter how calm and reasonable i am. but for most people...good idea!!!

i garnered the guts and i can definitely say it was for the WORSE. it went wayyyyy worse, needed a ton of tissues, and almost ended our wedding.

and then

that person went completely 180degrees on me as if NOTHING happened!!!

after all that?!?!?!?!?

so now, it seems that we're okay (??? hopefully ???)

The only person I've ever had to confront, albeti sarcastically and as passively as I can muster, was FBIL's wife....I don't quite know what goes on in her brain with the shitt she says to me
