I just wanted to tell you what FH and I are planning. He's got something like 14 neices and nephews. Mind you, some are still babies and won't be at the reception bc their parents don't want to be sidelined by the little tykes, but for the rest we gave them their own table and are putting the following on it:
4 packs of crayons 4 coloring books 2 pads of construction paper Strawberry shortcake plastic eye glasses Matchbox cars Glow in the dark necklaces Mini Play-doh containers
and a bunch of candy scattered on the table: Hershey kisses M&M packets Starburt lollipops
We want to be sure they have something to do if they get tired of dancing!
I was thinking of also putting out juice boxes, or at least giving them to the bartenders, what do you think?

That's so thoughtful of you to make sure they have something fun to do. I think it's a great idea.

That is a really nice thing to do - and I like the idea of giving the juice boxes to the bartenders. What is the age range of the kids?

They range from less than 1 year old (if his parents bring him) up to 14. He's the 7th of 8, and 5 of his siblings have kids, and I know his brothers want to have a good time w/o having to monitor their kids the entire time.

Re: For those of you having kids at the reception
We planned a kids table for the kids at our wedding. I was really surprised when one of my SIL's asked that her kids not be seated with the rest. She wanted to be sure they ate thier dinner, and behaved as she expected. I was surprised but of course respected her wishes. We put stuff out for the kids to do but they ened up taking them home, which was fine. They had so much fun being at a grown up event, ordering on thier own and dancing all night that they had no time to color.

Re: For those of you having kids at the reception
For the slightly older ones (age 8 & up) you may want to have a kid-friendly bar menu for them - they get easily offended by having a 'kid's drink' like juice boxes. Some ideas from parties I've thrown for my younger sister:
Juice cocktail - 1/2 cup any juice (fruit punch or orange are best) 1/2 cup seltzer, Ice, & orange slice and cherry garnish
Any clear soda (Sprite, seltzer) with a cherry or lime.
If you ask your hall ahead of time they should be able to easily accomodate you with this. You could make a mini-menu for the table with the drink options, letting them know that they are available if they ask so they dont feel silly or uncomfortable, and provide a copy to the hall and the bartender that day.

We're also doing a menu of chicken fingers, french fries, hamburgers and hot dogs for them in addition to all the goodies on the table like crayons, candy and stuff.

That is a really good idea! I really like the idea that you are going to give the bartender the juice boxes the kids will feel like grown ups going to get their drinks. This is to cute!
