I know ive read a few girls have or are having a family member make their dress. Did you work from a pattern or did you just wing it? Im trying to find a pattern that I like but all I find when I google is vintage dresses.
If you used a pattern, do you know of a good site with modern dresses on it? Im looking for a strapless dress preferably drop waisted.
We must have found the same web page at the same time since I just looked at those dresses! I like the first one but I have to ask my seamstress (aka mom) if she can do a drop waist on it.
Thank you

I wish I could have custom made my gown- probably would have saved a lot of $$ in the end.. but I love my gown I just love the look of an original design.

Re: For those of you having your dress made...
my mom made my dress for my wedding 2 years ago. it was the best experience and made my dress that much more special what we did was went to joann fabrics and looked at patterns i found one i liked, and my mom made it up quickly in muslin ( a really cheap white material) just so i could see how i liked the style and everything. THEN, once i was sure i liked that pattern, we went shopping in philly ( i grew up in south jersey near philly) and bought some beautiful silk-satin fabric and lace for around the bottom. i bet your mom could totally combine 2 patterns- like the top from one pattern and the bottom of another. and like i said, make it up quickly/roughly in a cheap material to make sure you like it first... have fun with it... its really an awesome experience to be able to do this with your mom and wear a dress that was handmade by her lol and just because i'm getting sentimental now, heres a pic of me in my dress

I'm sure there has to be patterns, even if they are simple and you can use different pieces. My mom made my dress too but she did not use a pattern. There are so many ideas if you go into the garment district in the city.. that's where we got everything! Good luck
here's a pic of her lacing it....

Wow... I didn't see this till now, sorry!!! It really was just her main hobby but I'm trying to get her into it professionally. It's definitely her calling If you have any questions, just ask!
