For those of you renting an apartment....

For those of you renting an apartment....

Do you recommend an apartment in a house or in a complex? Why?

Thanks.

Guess you all know what I'm up to this weekend

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

I personally would rather live in a house, preferably if the landlord does NOT live in one of the apartments in the house.

More privacy

Easier to unload groceries

Usually better parking

I'm always forgetting **** and I get to th car and have to run back int he house before I leave... easier when you don't have to travel through a whole building and take an elevator.

Less chance of bugs , BLECH

The house I live in has a driveway and a backyard and porch off the back of my kitchen.

That's my list off the top of my head

I live one floor up in a 2-family and i really like it. There's soundproofing between the 2 floors, so I don't hear the downstairs tenant and the parking is decent. The landlord has a couple of driveways and he's ok with blocking them or using the driveway temporarily if it's raining and I have groceries or something. The area is quiet and I don't have 3254367 neighbors.

I personally think a house in a complex would be better...we live in an apartment and are moving soon to another apartment only because we can't afford anything else yet. If you can upgrade and have a house or condo I say go for it!! Where are you guys looking??

We live in an apartment complex.

I love that my neighbors are quiet and generally when there is drama it's to watch.

No one complains. I send in my check and never worry about my landlord.

Sure, there are some things that annoy me, but overall, I MUCH prefer it to living in someone's basement.

This is our first time out. Looking at 2nd floor in a house in Lynbrook and complex in N. Bellmore & Seaford.

We live on the second floor of a two family and love it. We have backyard access, its on a quiet street with a lot of kids, there is driveway parking and separate meters. We have access to our own separate basement too. We definitely hear our neighbors sometimes (she has a teenage son and they get into arguments) but I love it because I am nosy and love listening to the

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

i've been in 2 houses and have had 2 different experiences.

1 st house i was on 2nd floor and all i heard were the other tenants downstairs.....i couldn't take it anymore. the rent was a little high due to it being so new and it was small. landlord was not present in that house.

Funny side note: FH and i had sex one night at about 2am and i was screaming at the top of my lungs and lets just say they didn't like it so much . they kept their noise down for a while after

apt #2: landlord is present but is never home. he's cool as hell BUT nothing gets fixed . apartment is a nice size though and rent is cool

i don't know if a complex would be better, i'm in same situation b/c i want to start looking soon

As someone who has lived in both, I much prefer a house. Unfortunately for us, our landlady lives in NJ, so we have to do upkeep and repairs for ourselves, but I'd still prefer it this way. Plus, we get a break on the rent for helping the elderly tenant on the third floor.

I would prefer an apartment in a house, like other's said it is more private and easier to move things in and out of. In a complex, you don't want to live on the 10th floor and have to move things in there.

My co-worker lives in a complex and she's always having issues with the super or landlord fixing things because there are so many apartments to tend to.

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

we currently live in an apartment in my parents 2 family house. i do not recommend this type of living situation. some may say since its my parents its different but i have to disagree. my cousin lived in the apartment prior to us & someone else prior to her & we all have had the same experience.

people who live in private houses, tend to think they can make all the noise they want since they own the house. our bedroom is directly under neath my parents dining room. they do not have an eat in kitchen (my mom wanted more counter space) so when my dad is up at 5am he is making noise directly over us trying to sleep. when my mom is babysitting for my brother (3 kids under the age of 8) it sounds like a circus. we had friends over one night & they left because we couldn't hear the movie we where watching. (we have 6 point surround sound).
not to mention when my sister gets home at 3am & wakes the dog, which FH & i then have to hear cry, because she sleeps crated in the dining room.

if we where not paying rent then we have no problem with the noise, but we do pay rent & we do help out with the upkeep. (shoveling snow, cleaning the leaves up, garbage, etc.) i have already told FH that when we start looking for our new apartment we have to live on the top floor. i don't care how much more that costs.

we have no had a good night sleep in 4 years, including when we where each on vicodin for having teeth pulled out. in order to reduce the noise i purchased ear plugs which cause 2 problems, 1. i don't hear the alarm in the morning, 2. pain in my ears.

so if you are going to go with a private house apartment either live on the top floor or make sure your lease has noise provisions in it.
we recently set a 9am-9pm noise rule, basically anyone can make noise between those hours.

we have an apartment in FIL 3 fam house... they do not live there but we are on the 1st floor so I assume the tenants upstairs will get annoying.

I have lived in an apartment im someones house (with the landlord lving there) and now live in an apartment in a complex on the 2nd floor (there is only 2 floors). I defitnetly like the complex better. I like that we have a gym, pool and tennis courts. Most of my neighbors are nice. I hated that when I lived in a house my landlord would complain about my tv or being loud.

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

I would recommend a house over a buliding only bc even if the landlord, whoever lives above or below you is noisey, you only have to deal with them and not people on both sides, above and below you. I only lived in an apt building for a little under 2 years, my mom still lives there, and it was pure hell. The walls were made of tissue paper and right next to my bedroom was a psycho who used to scream, curse and yell at her daugher all day and night long. If I would be up walking around, mind you in our own place, the old lady downstairs would take her broomstick and bang on the ceiling, unreal. Now my mom's new neighbor watches porn and leaves it on blasting so shes hears moaning all night long threw the walls.

My walls now in my current apt are made of paper too and you can hear everything threw the wall and vents. I like that it's quieter, but still fell like I have no privacy bc my landlords can hear everything. Also, they were very nosey the first year and would ring my doorbell for no reason and I would never answer lol. Now they are fine though.

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

Before we bought our house earlier this year we lived in two different apartments in two different complexes. We preferred the complex. The way this particular complex was set up was there was no one above or below you. We had a washer/dryer and it was huge. (the first one we had was smaller though) We had a nice backyard and little deck. So I had a good experience. My only thing when we were looking at apartments in houses were a lot of the apartments were 'illegal' so there was no written lease and I wasn't going to take that chance.

Re: For those of you renting an apartment....

i have lived in a garden apartment, a complex and now on the top floor of my parents house

i personally loved the complex the best. it had elevators which was great for moving things in/out. i sent the check in and there were no problems. they would sign for packages and had them waiting for me

teh garden apt was nice but no elevator (just 2 floors) and i found more bugs (spiders, eww)

my parents place is fine (cuz im not paying rent) but they hear me walkin around and they knwo when i come in and out

i just think ppl in apt complexes care less about the neighbors, where in a house everyone knows your business.

jmo..
