What do you put your puppie in when your not home and how long are you gone during the day. Im getting soo confused of the crate and the playpen and everything. I wanted to see what everyone else does.
for the most part, someone is home during the day, since i have a night job and am looking for a day job. soooo, she is usually able to be with someone. however, when i do go out, or when any of us go out, we put her in a crate. the crate is not punishment, so we don't stick her in there when we are home (unless someone is going to take a shower or needs to vaccuum...she is a royal PITA when i try to take a shower, so i usually keep her in the bathroom but she whines so much.) anyway, we crate her b/c she can not be alone...at all!!! it is for her safety. she cries and cries and we can hear her as we lock the door, but there are cords, stairs, little nooks and crannies, shoes, etc, that are so tempting to her, so she needs to be crated. but as i said, it is not used for punishment.
When my puppy was really small we used ot crate him at ngiht and when we went out. The idea is that it's a safe ahven and he won't feel nervous. It's also supposed to control potty problems. After awhile, we realized he'd get too antsy in the crate and he'd pee in it anyway and then be sitting in the pee, or trying to avoid it, and it was so sad to come home and see him hald sititng, half standing, trying not to sit in pee. Now we keep him in a small area in the hall when we're out. He's 10 mos now, but he's still rambunctious and not 100% housebroken. We don't know what a good solution is, but we're trying to figure it out.
Bailey was put in her crate (and still is) when no one is home. When she was a pup....she'd get put in around 8:45am or 9am....let out at lunchtime which was around 12 or 1pm...and then let out around 5/5:30pm. when she was an itty bitty puppy.. she pretty much stayed in the playpen around the crate area since she was not house trained yet....we'd pull her out to play or cuddle....and slowly increased her time out of the playpen area.
