for those of you that have remodeled your homes...
How much money(sorry to be tacky) have you spent and how long has it taken you??
I am not talking about getting a new roof because you needed one, but kind of redesigining your home to fit your taste and such.

I would talk to Kathy116 and FM her. She has remodeled her home once and is about to start an edition.

We are gutting our house next year, making the dormer upstairs a complete 2nd story and also going out 14 feet in the back. We've alloted 6-8 months for the project (DH is doing it in between working (hes a contractor)) and we've got about 200k as our budget. Its rough but we need more family space!!

Re: for those of you that have remodeled your homes...
To get our home the way it is today, we spent over 200K remodeling. THen we had no furniture, so we had to buy everything, that was 50K...
And yes, we are starting on a new home addition...we have heard ballpark estimates of over 400K...but no real estimates because we are just finalizing all the designs with our architect (this is more than an addition, we are adding over 3000 square feet...once we get settled, I'll give you all the details.
Keep in mind...our first remodel was down to the studs...we had everything gutted! New kitchen, New EVEREYTHING! This place was a mess...now I love it here.

but remember everyone.....it has a lot to do with the size of the house, what you are adding, and the materials you are using!

oh my goodness, that is so scary to me. We were thinking of redoing a house once we buy it (since the ones we have seen so far are completely disgusting) - but to buy a house in this market and then have to come up with another 200K! It almost seems as though it's worth it to spend a little more on the initial purchase to get at least some rooms in move-in/liveable condition.

The largest cost is skilled labor. Everyone promises the world and rarely do they deliver. I would estimate that we spend between 30 to 60k on our remolding. I am a finish contractor out East and had done most of the work all by myself but my father, who is a master cabinet maker, helped hang alot of the crown moulding and he custom built the entire kitchen for us. Bear in mind I did not need any additions so the only structural work was the covered porch and customized deck in the backyard. Everything else was eye candy. By this I mean colors, trim, crown, spackle, custom built furniture, etc... You can never have too big a budget for what you want!!

Re: for those of you that have remodeled your homes...
What started off as a house that needed some work- change roof, siding, windows of a 1 1/2 story ranch that would maybe cost $20K has ended up being change of roof, siding, windows, all interior walls, all bathrooms, new kitchen cabinets, flooring, repairing flooring (many holes under the carpet and lineloum flooring), insulating exterior walls (none of the exterior walls had any), making the 2nd floor a full 8 foot height (it had 4' knee walls), and much more. It would have been easier taking the whole house done- we left 3 walls standing bc of town code and the type of permit we got. I was hoping it would take 6-8 weeks. It will probably be at least 3 months. And over $100K. It's been too timely and costly.

Phil you are amazing, you built me the most beautiful porch I have ever seen. I love sitting on the porch with you and drinking wine with you on summer nights.
I also love sitting at the bar in our new kitchen while you cook dinner .
You have truly made our house a home and I can't wait to marry you!!! :
