Just wondering who makes speeches at the dinner and when do you hand out the BM and GM gifts?

In a couple of the wedding parties that I have been in the bride & groom gave a speech thanking everyone for being a part of the day. In a couple of others, there were no speeches. I don't know what the etiquette is either and I am curious to find out.

Our RD wasn't something small and intimate.. We had almost 90 people there lol

DH and I made the speech at our rehearsal dinner and we handed out the gifts after dinner.

I don't think there are right or wrong ways to do this. You can hand the gifts out whenever you feel the time is right. My FIL and father made speeches at my RD. My FIL made one and cried his eyes out and then my dad felt like he should and did a great job winging it.

My FI is going to give a speech (I know that if I talk that I am going to cry) and we will be handing out the gifts after dinner but before cake.
