For those that decided on taking the plunge-going back to school after 4+ yrs

Since I have been out of school for so long I was wondering what some of you have done to prepare yourself to get back into the school and studying groove.

I've only been out for two years, but I bought notebooks No, I just tried to plan for my work schedule to be some days and some nights so taht I can take classes at scattered times, yet still get in my 40 hours a week. Mentally, there's no way to prepare for me. I'll just have to take the plunge with a leap of blind faith.

prepare? hmmm...I took 5 years off in between my first freshman year in college and my second freshman year in college...I was all gung ho about it and determined to get a 4.0 the first semester just to see if I could (and I did - just have to pat myself on the back for a second) so I took only 2 classes that I thought I would enjoy, rather than something more difficult.

I'm finishing up my Master's right now. (Graduated from college with my Bachelor's in 1992)
I'm taking classes online, only 2 at a time. It's not easy! I don't really like coming home from work only to have to study, and then spend my weekends studying some more. I'm not a good studier either; I have to read the same thing over and over until it finally sinks in.
I didn't really do anything to prepare myself for going back to school and getting into the swing of things. I just did it!

I took 5 years off... i've starting by taking two classes at a time. After the wedding i may load up and go full time so i can graduate in two years. But i eased into it by going part time, i hated school when i was in it last time. But now i'm loving it,and am a total geek about it!! hehe

Did you read anything or do anything before taking req. classes? I feel like I need to take something to brush up on my writing skills.

actually, I didn't do any of that. I think the fact that I was paying for it myself and had to beg, plead, fight and then cry like a baby to get student loans was really motivation enough for me to focus. But I did wind up in a remedial math class because of not brushing up on my skills (I went back for my BA so tons of stupid requirements)

I am finishing my BA now, after having graduating high school in 1989. I'm not sure if 4 years had even gone by without taking at least one class, but you get the idea: it's been a slow process.

The biggest adjustment I had to make, now that I take 8 credits each semester and work about 50 hours per week, is that my friends and family feel shunned.

You may need to alert your family and friends that they will be seeing little of you. You will probably have to give up any long afternoons or nights out, except on school breaks.

that is so true clueless!!! I try to see my friends as much as possible in the summer and in January because the rest of the time, I'm MIA. Even FILs know, I don't go over (FH goes over every Sunday) during the fall or spring semesters...they only see me on holidays and in the summer.
