Suggested Wording Ideas for Thank You Cards
When writing to a close friend or relative:
Dearest Aunt Mary:
It's beautiful and we love it!!!!! How thoughtful of you to give Keith and me such a lovely family treasure. Grandmas' hand-crocheted bedspread will be my most prized possession. We both thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Love and Kisses,
Anna
When writing to a person you don't know very well:
Dear Mrs. Ghigliari:
Mother just gave me the beautiful crystal cake pedestal you left and I couldn't wait to tell you how lovely it is. Keith and I will think of you each time we use it. Thank you so very much.
Yours truly,
Anna Nelson
When writing to a group of friends who have gone together on a gift:
Dear Friends:
Thank you all very much for the place setting of sterling you so kindly have given to us for our new home. Keith and I now have a service for eight and are so looking forward to using it for every special occasion in our life. What a thoughtful idea. You are such a great group to work with and I appreciate each one of you.
Affectionately,
Anna Nelson
If less than ten people have gone together on the above gift, then a personal note to each must be written. If more than ten have participated and signed the enclosure card, such as in the case of coworkers in the same office, one note, placed on a bulletin board is considered proper etiquette. Be sure to speak to each person individually as the opportunity arises and express your gratitude.
When writing a thank you note for a gift not really cared for:
Dear Brett and Mavis:
Thank you so much for the gum ball machine. We'll be sure you're among our first guests to visit, so don't forget your pennies! Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Anna
When writing a thank you note for monetary gifts
Appreciation for monetary gifts are expressed in the same way you would thank a friend or loved one for a purchased item. If you have a particular item you intend to buy with the money, you can share that with them.
Example: Dearest Aunt Mary
Kevin and I want to thank you so much for the check you sent for our wedding. We have been saving for a down payment on our first home and have added your gift to our special account. It was so thoughtful of you. Someday soon, we will be inviting you to our housewarming!!! Can't wait to see you and Uncle Ted again.
Love,
Sarah

Thank you so much for the carrot peeler. It was truly a generous gift. Whenever I am peeling carrots or even the occasional potato, I will be sure to remember you & your kindness.

Re: For those who are at a loss for words when sending thank you cards
since you girls know how to word everything... how would you write a cash gift thank you note, where the party of 5 gives money way less than their cost just because they are jealous and are trying to be spiteful.....the comment of thanks for the gift which didnt even cover your cost sounds VERY tempting to me, although i cannot outright do that.

Re: the carrot peeler
sorry ladies, i had to work there for a little bit. ha ha ha the carrot peeler lines are cracking me up. Wacky i know these aren't yours (not that they couldn't be) it just sounds way to Emily Post for me.
i have to divert for a min and give more on the carrott peeler. an ex-housemate of mine from school (that i was never really close to) invited herself (AND her boyfriend) to the wedding (because most of the other housemates are invited she just assumed she was!)
then, we just got their gift in the mail. this nice Williams Sonoma gift box (which costs like an extra $5 to gift wrap) that was huge with all of the styrofoam peanuts in it. by the time we got to the thing FH was cracking up. he kept saying, are you sure there is nothing else in there??!!
i checked WS website (i had to!!) the peeler costs $6.99. The wrapping and shipping cost like over $10!!! oh boy! literally, every time i peel, i will think of her!

Re: For those who are at a loss for words when sending thank you cards
these are great - thanks so much
You could also include a sentence like:
'It seems like yesterday we were...(in 2nd grade together, playing at grandma's together, etc - depending on who they are) and I want to thank you for thinking of us on this very special day. We will truly treasure the (gift, check, vase, towels, etc!)'
Re: For those who are at a loss for words when sending thank you cards
I used a formula for most of our e-party/shower/wedding thank yous...all thank yous for that matter
Dear XXX
Thank you so much for XXXX. How you will use it.
Something about the day...if they weren't there...how you missed them
Thank them for the gift again
Love XXX
