For those who have gone to Costa Rica..

We're going on our HM in a couple weeks.

Whats your suggestion on the currency? Did you bring travelers checks or should we just bring American Dollars? Are you able to convert it to Colones in the Airport? Does everywhere accept American Dollars?

i went to Costa Rica in June - first of all your gonna have the BEST time! its really an amazing place, the food, the people, the views its all truly amazing!!

you can convert to Colones in the airport but we found most places accpeted american credit and debit cards, plus from regular atms you had a choice if i remember correctly if you wanted the money in colones or dollars, you only really need colones for street vendors and markets almost everywhere took cash and appreciated american dollars.

FYI not sure if you used a travel agent who already told you but when you leave Costa Rica every person has to pay an exit fee, i believe it was $26 per person and you could charge it or pay cash at the airport. we were surprised by this so just a heads up.

We went a few years ago and stayed in Manuel Antonio. We used American Dollars. All the street vendors and restaurants took dollars. We got some change back in colones though. The ATMs we used gave dollars too.
If you used a travel agent I would check with her about the place you are going to. I think where we went there were a lot of tourists, so the street vendors were pretty up on the currency exchange rates. LOL. They would tell you a price in colones or in dollars! Also I'm not sure if the dollar is as desirable as it was then. I remember the exchange rate dropping over the week we were there.
