What are/were your experiences with them. My FI and I would love to have a dog. We will be moving into our new home soon and we want it complete with a nice family dog. My FI loves Rottweilers and I love and had a yellow lab. We are looking for a nice family dog. I'm searching dog sites and reading about them Oh the most important thing is I want to find a dog from a reputable breeder where can I find one?

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
Sue - for a family dog I would recommend a lab - they are much better with children. I have a list of lab breeders here on LI that was given to me by a friend who got hers from a breeder who was President of the LI Labs Association.
I love Rotties - so cute but my gf has one and she is a handful and not so good with her nieces and nephews. However, this is just one dog - I'm sure others have a better temperment.
Drop me a FM if you are interested in the names.

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
I also grew up with Labs and they are just the smartest/friendliest/most gentle dogs and are wonderful with children! I worked in a veterinarian office for 3 years and the only dogs that ever got aggressive with me were rotties. They are generally great dogs, but because they became so high in demand some breeders do not take adequate care in breeding them and they often inbreed. The inbred dogs have a number of medical problems and very often have tempermental problems. If you do decide on a rottie be VERY careful with breeders!
Congrats on your tentative new pup and be sure to post some pics!!!
ETA: there are lots of breed rescues that you can adopt from-I am positive there are Lab Rescues as many of the dogs are those who didn't make it as seeing eye dogs but would make a great family pet!

I have been around both, I found labs to be a lot more energenic and predictable. I love rottys too, but I just don't trust them. If you ever plan on kids, something to consider

I also say labs! Rottis may be nice, but they have jaws that can break bones, I would just feel safer with a lab re: children.

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
I know rotties are scary dogs from the looks and the whole jaw thing but my family has the sweetest most gentle rottie! A lot of family friend have had the same experience. The dog is a 100lb puppy. He likes to come and sit on your lap and loves attention - even if it is just him leaning on your leg as you sit on the couch and watch tv. We say if a burgular ever came into our home - he would lick him to death. Kids tend to love him as well and he is good with them but because of his size sometimes he is a little to much.
Yellow labs tend to be my favorite dog - so it is a hard choice.
Too bad I am allergic to both of them!
Here is my doggie (well my family's dog) - ringing in the new year (notice he is sitting on someones lap/leg):
Maybe i'm being biased but i'd have to say labs (I have a black lab who is my 'baby')

My DH has had his rottweiler for 6 years. She sheds everywhere and is entirely too large for me PERSONALLY but i will say she has the sweetest and most gentle temperment of any dog I have ever seen! You want to be scared of her when you se her but once you get to know her its impossible!

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
I definitely say a Lab!! I have a yellow English lab, she is my baby. I absolutely LOVE her! I don't know if you know the difference between an English lab and an American Lab. The English is the shorter stockier lab and then tend to be a little less hyper as puppies. We got our Lab from a breeder in Florida, she was flown right in to Laguardia. My breeder was Excellent! If you ever need any info please FM me!

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
I have experience with both dogs.
As has been said, labs are gentle, patient, social dogs. Good with children. They allow others (people and animals) to enter their space.
You need to spend time with labs. They love attention. They are low maintenance in the sense that they don't require complicated grooming, and they are healthy dogs, but they are not low main. in the training and atetntion dept.
Rotties are loyal, and are not as super-friendly as labs are. They are really smart and want to protect their family. We had one when I was little, and he was so great with me and my family, but when other kids came around to play, he would sometimes bark, nothing more, just bark, if we were playing 'rough'.
I can't help with finding a good breeder. Good luck!

My experience is only with labs, we have a black lab named Roxy. She is a great dog, but is prone to those spurts of energy where she runs around the house like a maniac, luckily we have a big backyard for her to play in.
She is a sweet girl and good with our son, the only downside is she SHEDS so much, I am constantly vacuuming or swiffering

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
I'm a lab lover myself. We have 2. A black bench lab from a breeder in Michigan and a black field lab that we rescued. (We were pointed in his direction through the Long Island Lab Rescue.) The field lab is extremely high energy, probably why he was in the pound...just too much for his original owner to handle. He's relentless....never tires...unlike our other lab.
Definitely attention driven dogs. They need to be a part of the 'pack' and they need plenty of exercise. It's actually great having 2 because they entertain each other.
But like all dogs...they bite. We were actually told by the woman who runs the LI Lab Rescue that Labs have the most dog bites on record. (I have yet to be bitten by one or know anyone who has. All the labs I know, you could stick a pencil in their eye and they'd take it...not that I would advise doing that! )

Re: For those who have/had a Rottweiler or Lab...
i totally agree with niecey!!! i have had both & personally - Pete and I will totally be looking for a Rotty about a year after our first child is born. We have always had Rotties, even had puppies with them! NEVER EVER EVER had a problem with any one of them!
