Re: Ford explorer

My FH has a 1991 Explorer with 175,000 miles on it (YES, I'm serious ) original engine, and it has to be the best running vehicle he has ever had. Except with the few minor repairs that come with an older vehicle, there has never been anything wrong with it. I definately recommend them!

I would just check the tires...especially since it is an older vehicle.

My aunt was one of the victims of the Ford Explorer/Firestone Tire issue. She and my uncle had just sold their home in Florida and were driving across country to their retirement house when the tire ripped to shreds, the car flipped over and she died. He punctured a lung, broke a few ribs and was all messed up. It was 3 months to the day after my wedding in 2000....

I know there was a lot of back and forth between Ford and Firestone - one saying the other was at fault. I think at the end of the day it was decided the fault was the tire company...though my memory is foggy right now and I can not say that with certainty. You can probably find that info on the National Traffic Highway Safety Web Site.

Just make sure the one you are looking at has a different model tire....or buy the car and go out and purchase some michelins.

I don't have one but my brother does. He loved it at first but over the years has had some problems with it. I would be very careful buying one that old. They tend to not last too long.

Again, not my own experience, just something I've heard.

Re: Ford explorer

sounds like he may be buying DH's aunts...

DH's family has had a lot of luck with Explorers...what is a key point too...is that they are good on gas...(as good as my saab is...)

I would be careful...Especially with buying a 95. The 95 was the first year for that body style. I used to work at Ford....Although the explorer is a good SUV, I wouldnt recommend getting a 95....I also wouldnt recommend getting an explorer with that much mileage. Explorer's are known to have bad tranny's, steering column problems, and a few other annoying issues. They creak....and their interiors rattle....I would get a Japanese SUV over purchasing a FORD with that much Mileage....Japanese cars and trucks last longer and are more reliable even with that mileage.

DH has one for work and he has lots of problems with it. The transmission already needed to be replaced and it has less then 50,000 miles. He's had it for about 4-5 years.

DH had a 95 and had absloutely no problems with it. He loved that car. He finally sold it in 02 and bought a brand new 03- it was on the first ones made and because of that he's had many problems.
