Foreigners

My best friend works in a Dr. Office. Today some lady from another country comes in with like 5 other people cause each one knows little english. The lady started freaking out on my friend about how 'we' (america) writes the date. She tells her EVERYOTHER country write DD/MM/YY. And we have to write it MM/DD/YY because we think we are #1.

Okay thats the way we do sh!t here. If you don't like it go home! I am all for people coming into this country and I don't mind it so much when they speak in their language (as long as they can SPEAK english too) After all we were all Foreighners at one point unless you are Native American. But that pissed me off. Dont come here and criticize us. You came here for a reason?!?!?!

OK GO!!!!!!!!

too funny! My dad had a conversation with someone who was just complaining about the cost of freaking tomatoes here in the US and how where he is from they are so cheap! Can you believe it! FReaking Tomatoes!!!!

GO BACK HOme! WHy are you here? My Dad was pretty pissed. I don't have a problem with Foreigners living here...... just stop complaining.

i cant take that shizz

It is a little weird. we're the only people who don't use the metric system, the 24 hour clock and the DD MM YY date.

I actually write my dates the european way

Okay, I have to pipe in here because for all intents and purposes, I AM an immigrant in another country. It is frustrating when you've done something one way your entire life and then you suddenly have to do something the opposite way. The date writing is a great example...I do sometimes get screwed up and have been known to arrive at the wrong place at the wrong time because of it

I don't just walk into a store and start complaining about the systems in this country...but my DH hears it pretty often and every once in a while I'll let it slip at work around my colleagues.

It's election time right now here, so one of the big campaign issues is immigration and how much people should be expected to assimilate. My DH maintains that they're not talking about me per se (ie WHITE - they're talking more about Indian-Asian and Arabic)...but I do really feel touched by this issue because I DO NOT think of myself as English, nor do I ever want to be. There's all this talk about 'Britishness' and trying to define what it means to be English. They're basically saying that they want to try to preserve the British culture and it's very sensitive because people are saying that it's a slippery slope towards racism. I really try hard to preserve my American heritage, whether that be through food, speech, etc. So, maybe I'm sensitive to it...

As a foreign language teacher this comes up many times a year with my students. Habits that I have to get them to break for my class and only my class, such as writing the date. It's funny but in my class we DO NOT speak ENGLISH. You walk into my room you have walked into a SPANISH speaking world and that means doing things the way they would be done in that country. It is so hard for the kids because as Farrah is saying it is giving up part of your identity!!! The kids say why can't everyone just do it the American way, and then I have to point out the quantity of other countries that do it that way and that even OUR military does it that way and that we are the ones that are truly different. It's weird but I understand it! But I would never ever comment to a random person in a office or customer service position about it.

I don't know if I made any sense here or not

I still do too.

DH and his family are from Poland and I don't hear him complaining about the way we do things here ( well at least not in public).

My IL's, though, like to let it be known that 'only in America can a couple get married and 2 months later have a full-furnished home'. They seem to forget that DH and I lived home with our parents until we got married so we could save for our home and that our friends and family gave a beautiful gifts in an order to help us get started. Just because they had to get married abruptly because MIL was pregnant with BIL and they didn't have what we have it isn't my fault.

Regarding the date thing. THat worked in my favor!!! I was born in Israel and have dual citizenship and two passports. My Israeli passport has by birthdate down as 3/7/73 instead of what we would write for July 3 - 7/3/73. Guess who had a legal and valid ID four months before her 21st birthday!!!!

absolutely! if you decide to live in US ...adopt the ways of doing things - like speaking english! we would expect to do the same if we moved to a diff country

i agree to a point- but we are also very fortunate because MANY if not MOST countries speak English as their second language-
