Formal Attire on Invite

hey ladies,

so last night i met with a dj and we were talking about the feel of the wedding and we got to talking and i was telling her how we have a lot of OOT guests coming in from the south and the midwest so im a little nervous about people dressing formal enough. i hope i dont sound like im sterotyping here, its just that me and FH have been to a few weddings of his family and friends from these areas and people were wearing jeans and sneakers! im just curious how i should word the invite without sounding rude? we're having a pretty formal saturday night wedding, but i dont want to write 'black tie' because its not so formal that people should feel they need to wear tuxes. should i just not write anything and hope people dont come in jeans? im not sure what to do i dont want to offend anyone

My mom's entire family is from the midwest. She just made sure to tell them what the appropriate attire was. We didn't put anything on the invite.

i have the SAME concern with FH's family!!! I spoke to FH about it and he doesnt want to write 'formal attire' or 'black tie' so we are just hoping for the best I guess....
i would be happy putting formal attire but oh well

I have the same deal,lots of OOT guests from upstate where jeans and sweaters are worn to weddings. I'm going to write formal attire-- to me it means suits and dresses-- black tie means tuxes and we dont want that either.

I would write 'black tie optional'...this way people don't feel like they must wear a tux, but know that formal attire is necessary.

I have the same situation. I always thought it was rude to put that in an invitation but my FH has a lot of family in the mid west I have been to their weddings and they do not dress nice at all. I will be writing formal attire requested on my invite.
