Freaking Out

Ok,
I started getting a sore throat before bed. Now it is 2:30 in the morning and I cant even swallow from the pain. I am totally freaking out that I am getting really sick! I have 22 parent teacher conferences this week! I cant get sick!!!!
What can I do to keep it from getting worse?
I cant sleep cause it hurts too much!

I know exactly how you feel. I am up right now also due to a horrible sore throat and cold. So many of my students are sick this week and the germs are just everywhere.

Last night I went and got some chloraseptic (sp) spray which sort of numbs the throat. Right now I am drinking orange juice. Also, drink lots of tea and honey and try one of the tylenol flu/sore throat/cold medications that are available over the counter.

Thanks girls! Once DH wakes up I think I am going to send him for some stuff for my throat.

How ironic it is that I just read this because I was just about to write that I am freaking out over the same thing. I went to the doctor on Thursday and she gave me antibiotics for strept throat, now, two days later, my throat is TWICE as swollen and I can barely swallow. The sides of my throat are almost touching they're so swollen. I'm totally FREAKING out. I'm deciding if I should wait until nine when she is in her office or go to the emergency room

If your throat is that bad, maybe you should go to the ER. Is your doctor in on Saturday? I am thinking about going to some doctor today because I feel awful and do not want to be out next week.

TAMIFLU Immediately. Works so quickly if you take it within 24 hours. That and your husabnd needs to wait on you hands and feet.

I think you should go to the ER, that sounds scary.

I dont even know if I have strep yet...I dont even want to go to the doctor.

I called my doctor this morning and she was not in, but the other doctor said that sine my throat was not that bad when I went in on Thursday evening (obviously I gave him that info), then it's just the strept running its course. He also said that the anti-biotics I am on are in the same family as the ones I am allergic to, and that my doctor had a note in my file for someone to call me today anyway, but I have no symptoms of an allergic reaction. He said just keep resting and if I have any problems breathing, go to the ER. I have not had any trouble breathing, but I STILL have a low grade fever and have been taking 4 advil every 5 hours I can't stand up for too long because I feel like I am going to pass out, and everyone who lives here will be gone until tomorrow So I'm here alone and I'm feeling really nervous that my throat will swell more over night, since that is what happened last night I hope everyone else is feeling better. I'm definitely not. And I've gotten desperate enough that I managed to drag my arm chair over to the computer because sitting all the way up is totally draining.

I'd like to say that I was sick with a horrible sore throat back in 2003 to the point I couldn't swallow my own spit. I was in bed for three days, when I finally went to a Dr. they said it wasn't strep, just a virus that had to run it's course and they couldn't do anything for me. Went back two days later....another Dr in the office gave me antibiotics for strep to see if it would work (because I was sitting in the dr's office CRYING from the pain) with a 102 fever....ended up being tonsilitis (they never correctly diagnosed me) and my tonsils never fully recovered and the swelling never went away....like a month or 2 later, I had a ENT (ear, nose Throat) tell me they needed to come out. OUCH.

ETA: I had those nasty white spots that were VERY visible to the naked eye too....ick...nothing helped the pain.

Yes, this is a big problem, and I know tonsilitis is hard to decipher from strept and what not. My weakness is my throat. When I get an infection in my throat, it is usually bad, ever since I had mono ten years ago. Did they tell you to have them out, just like that? The doctors I have seen always tell me that even though I get infections pretty badly, that my tonsils do more good than harm. Times like this I WISH they'd take the freaking things!!!!!!!

I am still not feeling better, been taking advil all day long. My head feels like it is going to explode and my throat is unbearable.

Rachel.....the ENT told me it was my choice....either suffer WHEN I do get sick, or have them out and my chances of having such a sever problem like that diminishes.....and I'm happy to say since then, nothing more than a mere cold. Nothing more than a slightly scratchy throat that is gone in a day or two. No ear problems either!! It was worth it. If you want to know more about my ordeal with getting them out at 25, FM me. And your tonsils really don't serve a purpose....
