Two Winona WI public school students are in the middle of a controversy. They attended a performance of the 'Vagina Monologues' and came back to school wearing 'I [heart] my vagina' buttons.
Administration says its offensive and has threatened the girls (who btw have NEVER been in the principals office in the 4 years theyve attended school) with suspension and now expulsion. The expulsion comes on the heels of the girls getting support from more than 100 students who have now bought both 'I [heart] my vagina' and I [heart] your vagina' (for boys) tee shirts.
Questions is - do you think they should be allowed to wear the buttons or shirts or since it is offensive/uncomfortable to some, they shoudl be banned

you cant wear a pin that says 'i heart my vagina' but you can have your thong hanging out of your pants and wear belly shirts in HS and make out in the halls. ?!?!?!?
actually you can't wear those kind of things...thongs showing, skirts too short..they will send you home to change!

its not in all districts...in mine, the kids are all outgrowing their clothes so you see their underwear sometimes or their skirts get shorter and shorter but its inner city so we cant just send them hom to change cause they usually dont have anything to change into or the parents arent home to pick them up and take them home to change
but in my district no kids would ever wear that pin b/c they dont see plays like VM
but I'm hijacking the thread...back to the free speech issue

Oh, I totally agree that is what shouldbe done however in my school, there are so many kids in the office for more serious offenses that the Principal and AP dont have time for ill fitting clothing issues- its a different situation in my case

I went to Catholic school and if you were out of dress code and no one was home, they would have you wear clean clothes that had been in the lost and found. My friend came back to class a few times with rust colored courdoroys that looked like they were left there in the 70s. Needless to say, that was an incentive to take a better look at the dress code!
