From the city to the burbs...

From the city to the burbs...

I work on Wall Street right now, but FH and I are thinking that after the wedding I should look for work in Long Island because that is where we want to live/raise a family. I do not want to work 1 or 2 hours from home once I have children! I'm having a hard time wrapping my brain around working anywhere but the city. I grew up in Suffolk so it's not like I don't know LI but I've been in Queens/NYC for 10 years now and going back is weird. I'd have to DRIVE somewhere to get my lunch? And I can't sleep on my way to/from work? Amongst many other changes that go along with this. Has anyone done it? How was the adjustment?

I can't WAIT to work on LI and get out of the city. Think of the positives maybe;
- not having to sit on a stuck RR or subway b/c of someone else's mistake. At least with traffic you can take side streets.

- Driving to work might take you 1/2 the amount of time as it does to take the rr and subway. Therefore you sleep longer!

- You dont' have to worry about walking around in a crappy day like today.

- Lunch on LI is CHEAPER then in the city!

Those are def good points and I know there are positives to working in LI. In fact, I miss living there where there is property and pools and trees lol. It's just a big change. I love the hustle and bustle of the city, the city around the holidays, the ease of popping into any and every store I could ever need on the way home. Plus I don't take the LIRR so I'm not stuck with that horrible schedule. I ride the subway which comes every 5 seconds so I can come and go as I please. When I don't come to the city for a few days I feel like I'm missing something lol

i work on wall street right now too!!

fh is actually working in hicksville right now but we live in the City. After the wedding we are gonna save $$ to buy a house on long island so I will end up having to commute into the city. I would love it if I found a job on long island so I didnt have to commute as far but even if I have to commute in i am excited to move back to the suburbs....so we can have a bigger place with a yard for our dog and so i can drive again!

Small world! Wouldn't it be funny if we're in the same co?? FH works in Hauppage and we live in Queens right in the middle of both of our jobs. I'm def looking forward to the yard for our dog too! She has so much energy and loooves going to my mother's in LI. But I can say all these good things about LI and still go into a panic at the thought of not, at least, working in the city. Keep the positive coming! I'm hoping to be convinced at some point.

Btw I forgot to mention that working in LI means, buying a new car and paying for gas to commute! Right now I buy an $89 monthly metro card through a pre-tax dollar program so it costs me about $50 actual dollars a month to commute. That's NOTHING!

Re: From the city to the burbs...

I had the opposite situation-i lived in Valley Stream; and commuted to POrt Washington everyday. I HATED the commute-getting stuck in dreadful traffic on the Northernstate or the LIE during rush hour-there was just no way getting around the traffic. And like you said; my co-workers and I had to drive to lunch everyday-it's not the worst thing; but is a pain on nasty days especially since we would sometimes have to drive 20+minutes just to get to places we really liked.

I left and got a job in NYC and love it. I sleep in the train; run outside to grab lunch; it's a different atmosphere and is more me-some people prefer working on long island-but i don't miss it.

The down side is instead of being stuck in traffic; sometimes there are train delays and that can be a pain; but those aren't every day.

Yup- forgot about the gas expense. Depending on how far you have to commute-expect to full your tank up each week

I lived in Whitestone right out of college and worked right next to the Pistilli building. It took me about 3 seconds to get to work. Haha

I'm an auditor at a bank. We don't have any LI offices so I'll have to leave my job. Which is okay bc I'm overworked and underpaid anyway. I'm hoping I can be underworked and overpaid in LI

I did the opposite - we moved to CT because we wouldn't have to commute (we both work in stamford) and we hated the burbs so much that we moved back to NYC and now I drive 35-1 hour each way!

It just wasn't for us. I think our mindset will change when we have kids but for right now the city is where we want to be!

That's the whole thing - I think kids really change things up. I wouldn't want to work far from them. We're not planning to start for a few years but if I switch jobs I'd like to take something I'll be in for the long run. I'm not the type to job hop - I've been at my job now for 6 years.

Re: From the city to the burbs...

Personally, we are moving (well, FH is moving) to LI and will commute to Brooklyn by car everyday.......you can move somewhere closer, not necessarily Suffolk.......

I personally couldn't not work in the city, maybe I could now, but not later on when kids are involved. You get so much more for your money out here and you are still close to the city....if your kids get sick and you have to pick them up, you can't exactly leave them there for an hr while you take the subway home.....also, I find that if I needed to, I could run home during lunch if necessary or what not. Doesn't mean you have to drive to get lunch....your office could be located near many stores or what not or may have a cafeteria downstairs.......

this is of course just my opinion........
