Full-Figured Brides...HELP!

I went to try on dresses at Macy's today and of course all samples were a size ten and I'm a 14 - 16 bridal dress size.

Anyone have any suggestions on shops to try that may carry larger size samples to try on?

Im a size 14 and I had no trouble with most of the sample sizes. Most of them didnt zip up all the way, but they got close enough to give you a very good idea of what the dress will look like in your size. A good salon will pin or the tie the dress to be fitted to your body so it looks like it fits from the front (or very close to it).

I was a little worried before my first dress shopping experience because I didnt want to feel like a cow squeezing into a tiny dress - but it really was no problem at all.

The only problem was with Jim Hjelm gowns - for whatever reason, their samples are in a size 6 instead of the standard size 10. So there was one more form fitting JH dress I wanted to try on and I felt like meat in a sausage casing. But everything else was just fine.

Hope that helps.

I would suggest calling some bridal shops to see if they have plus size bridal gowns to try on. I got my dress from Bridal Suite in Patchogue and they had a fairly large selection of plus size gowns to try on. They even had the dress I wanted in a size I could fit in and I ended up loving the way it looked. The dress I tried on was only a size smaller than the dress I ordered so I was able to get a really good idea of how it would look on me before I bought it.

I would not recommed getting your dress from then however. I had a really bad experience with both my dress and my MOH dress. But you can always try on there and order from someone else.

If you want to get an idea of some plus size dresses try www.alfredangelo.com. They make beautiful plus size gowns.

Go to Blanches Bridal, in East Rockaway. They have a lovely selection and the samples are not all small sizes.

Lynbrook Bridal on Sunrise Highway in Lynbrook (near the White Castle) also has samples in large sizes as well as regular sizes. That's where I bought my dress.

THanks Ladies for all your responses.

The girl at Macy's was really nice ans she did clip the dresses to the bra I was wearing but it was still hard to see what the dresses would look like. Unfortunately I had a big bustline and the dresses looked all distorted on top because the sample were so small.

If you're down to go to Manhattan, try RK Bridal.

I'm a 14 also, and worried about the same things. None of the gowns I tried zipped up, but like Stef said, they'll pin it for you with clothes pins and you'll get a very good idea based on that!

I tried on some plus-size gowns at Macys in Lake Grove.

For the most part, gown shopping is a lot of 'visualization'. (and praying! )

I agree with Lisa - I had to use a lot of imagination with some dresses I tried on. Bridal Suite in Centerach is great. They will pin you and clip you and you feel like the dress fits. Also, Bridal Suite in Patchogue has a whole back room of plus sized gowns and they are wonderful there. I was very nervous to go shopping because of sample sizes being too small, but these two places made me feel like it wasn't even an issue. Good Luck

Re: Full-Figured Brides...HELP!

I had soooo much anxiety about dress shopping during my planning for this reason. However, even though the samples did not fit me I was able to get into to them (but not zip them up). I was still able to tell which dresses complemented me and which did not. I went to the Wedddding Salon in Manhasset and had a wonderful experience with them.
