DH's uncle's mother just passed away (it's his father's sister's husband's mother, so not a blood relative). He never really knew her (he perhaps met her once), and is unsure of how to respond/proceed. We live in Manhattan, so it's possible, although not easy, to attend the wake (but I wonder if it's just going to put pressure on his aunt to 'host' us). Any advice on what to do? He is relatively close with his aunt, but not super close. We are torn - would flowers + card be enough, or should we go out to the Island for the wake (we can't make the funeral as we have to go out of town).

Re: Funeral etiquette?
if you can make the wake, i would suggest going. just the fact that you are torn, you will probably feel better if you go. if it is really too much of an inconvenience, flowers and a card would definitely be 'proper' etiquette since this is not a close relative, IMO.

Re: Funeral etiquette?
For wakes, if I think to my self 'Should I go?' I go.
DH's aunt won't feel pressure as she is in mourning and will be going through the motions of greeting and accepting condolences from everyone. I know it would mean a lot to her if you decide to go. Flowers and a card would be fine also.
