Funny Fashion Trend of the Past - Wednesday

Funny Fashion Trend of the Past - Wednesday

Leg warmers! I am going to admit (out loud) that I really really really wish leg warmers would come back in style. Not because I find them particularly attractive (I do think they can be cute though), but mostly because my legs do tend to get cold! I did totally rock the arm warmers back in the day (the ones with the thumb holes!)

Wikipedia: Leg Warmers are a type of clothing similar to a sock except that they are footless. Leg warmers were traditionally made of pure wool, though nowadays they are typically made from a mixture of cotton and/or manmade fibres.

Worn by dancers, leg warmers are functional pieces of clothing used to keep the lower legs warm.

In the early 1980s they were part of a fad when they became popular with teenage girls as everyday clothing. Their popularity was partly due to the influence of the films Fame and Flashdance and the concurrent aerobics craze. However, they had retreated back into relative obscurity by 1989.

In 2004 leg warmers made a brief comeback and were once again worn as a fashion item. This time they are usually more toned-down than the 80's style, and are worn to dress up casual outfits. They have also been worn with flip flops. Leg warmers are frequenty worn in the rave scene.

A new take on legwarmers has been arm warmers, first seen as a wider fashion piece in the fall of 2004.

On the Showtime comedy, Dead Like Me, the character Roxy is the creator of the leg warmer, and was strangled to death with her own invention by a friend who wanted to take the credit for herself.

I loved my pink leg warmers. I could so use them on train rides. I see some girls wearing them before their dance classes and I'm kind of envious - they just look right wearing them; I don't think I could pull it off anymore.

But arm warmers?

yeah I would never attempt the arm warmers anymore. Maybe I will dress up and pretend to be a dancer just so I can rock the legwarmers (is that sad?). Although the fact that I am awkward and clumsy might give me away!

I really think leg warmers with flip flops needs to become a trend (and replace the current leggings trend).

I love watching So You Think You Can Dance, most of the dancers find a way to incorporate leg warmers into their practice ensembles....

Oooops, sorry, I posted about the banana hammock not realizing that today's discussion was supposed to be about leg warmers!!! Now I really need the fashion police to arrest me!

Yah, leg warmers were great. But I hated when the flea markets tried to sell itchy polyester ones in weird colors.

I think we can create an imaginary person who wears all of these trends at once. He/she will have a mullet, speedos and leg warmers and yellow shoes. What else?

There is definitely room for more than 1 fashion trend discussion a day - they are all so amusing

ETA: I wish we had a cool new trend and celebs weren't just recycling 80s trends (and not even the cool ones!)
