Funny Student Teaching Experience -- NWR!

so, i started my student teaching this semester... I am working with 8th grade..

we were discussing nationality in order to introduce them to a novel we are going to begin reading.

i was asking the students if they knew what nationality they are...

keep in mind, i live in Western PA...middle of no one...

one kids response....

'Im half mexican..half redneck'

the class burst into laughter, and the kid didnt understand why. he was completely serious. he was like NO, for real, my mom is mexican and my dad always says we're rednecks

he DID believe it, he had NO IDEA why everyone was laughing...my co-op teaching had to help me out with that one lol. i was speechlesss

he said said that, reguardless of what your father says, part of your nationality does not consist of Redneck....he might refer to your family as 'rednecks' but its just a way of life.
