I am interested in purchasing a new dining room set. Any suggestions where to buy good quality furniture for a decent price? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion:
Avoid Huffman Koos .. no matter what the sale, no matter how good the offer sounds.

I would say the same thing about Levitz - we had a terrible time with the entertainment center we bought - broken pieces & botched delivery schedules plus they were impossible to deal with.
Ironically we never had a problem with Seamens so I would recommend them (I believe they are owned by the same company).
There is a slew of furniture stores on 110 and there are a lot of dining room stores on Old Country Road across from the source mall.
Gothic Cabinets has some nice pieces as well. My sis was able to match up a hutch to her dining room set for about a third of the cost from Fortunoffs. You would not be able to tell them apart.

Re: Furniture
I just went to the PB outlet today in Riverhead. They had an ENORMOUS amount of furniture that was all in perfect quality and really discounted.

Re: Furniture
Ebay!
You don't necessarily need to bid. There are a lot of importers selling on there and they often have links to their retail websites.

Re: Furniture
My DH used to work for seamans. Seamans then bought Levitz (although the Company info says Levitz home furnishings) Mike worked in the Parts dept. and then in Delivery. People would always call to complain and their delivery guys suck! My SIL bought a bedroom set and they delivered the mirror 2 times once it was crakced and once it was warped finally the rd time it was right! I can tell you they S*CK their furniture is not great. And they are very over priced. I will admit when we went lookin for furniture we looked at both places. However we wound up finding a nicer couch at fortunoff that was the same price bigger prettier and better Quality then the one we liked in Seamans and Knowing their background we went with Fortunoff. We bought our Table and Chairs from Tiffany Furniture on rt. 110 in Farmingdale. We had the chair not even a week and DH leaned back on it and it broke (and he isnt a big guy) we called and they did replace it. I would say ure best bet would be fortunoff (u think they would be expensive but they arent that bad) or RTE.110 I would STAY FAR FAR away from 'levitz home furnishings' (levitz and Seamans)

Re: Furniture
Fortunoff is having a sale through spetember 30th. It seems great. We're gonna buy some furniture there, and they have a plan for no payments, no interest until april 2005!

We got ours at Seamans and it is wonderful..
We are getting our kitchen set, living room set and Pillow top mattress from Seamans this Saturday, and I cannot wait.
If you goto Seamans, goto the one on Old Country Road in Carle Place and ask for Frank Cusa. He was our salesman. He is very nice, ver knowledgable and he didnt pressure us into anything. I know there are a few sales people there that will pressure you and that drives me crazy. We didnt have any of that with Frank. Scott

I second the eBay suggestion! Some places just run their entire business off eBay and you wouldn't believe what you can get for aweseome prices! You can do a search for whatevr type of furniture you need, even just checking hte online eBay stores if you're more comfortable with that. It's such a wonderful resource, it's worth a look :)

Re: Furniture
I looked everywhere - and I mean everywhere - for my dining room set. I actually got the best quality at the best price from someone who made it for me. I told him exactly what I want, what kind of wood and finish, what kind of chairs, etc. It came out beautiful and is very sturdy. I'm going to have him make my china cabinet next (as soon as we have some $$$)

Why?
Why avoid Huffman Koos???? You can do a search here and read back on all my posts regarding the horrible experience I had with them ..
but short version .. we had ordered a dining room table from them .. we went through 5 tables and 2 tech visits before I finally gave up the battle with them .. the last table they brought was fine .. just not 'perfect' .. certainly not the quality of what we spent .. but I had just had enough .. and we felt it was worth it to consider it acceptable.
However .. it took nearly 1 year of sickening aggrivation, being poorly treated from nearly every department within their organization, which included people who just simply stopped returning my phone calls. The manager at the Farmingdale store did not return my phone calls for about the first 4 months in this ordeal as I struggled with trying to resolve the issue through other departments (like the warehouse, delivery, etc).
It was just an absolute mess .. and that's an understatement!!
You can also do a search for others on this site who have also had issues with Huffman Koos.
Sure, if you are fortunate enough to get through the delivery process with no troubles, I can understand how someone could say they were fine .. BUT .. if you did have any troubles that required assistance through customer service .. brace yourself!! It will be an experience that will make you sick!!

Re: Furniture
110 is a good place to go. There is also a Seaman's out there that has a big clearance department (bigger than the one in Westbury). We got a great deal on a couch and loveseat from the Clearance Dept. At least, the buying was great. When the furniture was delivered it didn't fit through the door! But they credited us for everything, even the delivery (which I thought we'd be out) and we got a couch and love seat. They were very helpful there, since we have size issues with our doorways.
Pier One has some beautiful furniture too. FH and I saw a couple dining room tables that we'd love to have (when we have the room!). We ordered bedroom funiture during a sale, and FH opened a credit card, so we saved a total of about $500 I think, and the furniture is really nice and of good quality. Also, everything was delivered sooner than they'd originally told us.
