Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
Let me tell you marriage is really about compromise. My husband and I were out all day Sat looking for furniture for our apt. We were looking at dining room sets. Our apt is a very nice 1 BR. We have a huge living room and bedroom, but our bathroom and kitchen/dining area is small.
Well I wanted to get a small round table with 4 chairs, nothing grand because after all it is an apartment. Well he though the table was too small because if we entertain and have another couple over for dinner the table will be too cluttered and there will not be enough room for the food to go in the middle.
Now I thought this was a ridiculous reason to get a table, I mean I do not see us having too many sit down dinners, we will have GTG'S , but I see those as more serve your self type things.
Now those who live in an APT if you do have a dining set- how big is it? Also, do you have a lot of sit down dinners?

Re: Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
when I lived in my apt, I had a nice size eat-in kitchen and had a round table that only sat 4. If I had more that 4 people over for dinner, I would take the coffee table out of the living room and set up a folding table in the living room and that is where we would eat.

We have a nice/but small/ brooklyn apt. We have a small table, but it has folding leafs so if we have guests we can open it up. Still only fits 6 people comfortably though..

Our dining area isn't that big. We have a glass top table from innovations that pulls out to seat 6. We hardly ever use it, but it's pretty..
I would say we have friends or family over maybe every other week and use the table. When we have the time we have a nice sit down dinner in the dining room.

Re: Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
We dont entertain a lot and live in a Jr. 1-Br with eat in kitchen. We got a small square table at IKEA (about 52x52 inches) and placed the table against a corner in such a way that only 2 sides are usable on everyday basis. If we were to have a couple come and join us for dinner we would pull the table out and use the 2 other stools that we have in addition to the 2 regular chairs. In such a case, I wouldn't put the main food dishes on the table, and would keep them on the counter, and only have the people's plates/glasses on the table, so that the center is not too cluttered.
I do think that a square table provides slightly more useable space than a round table of the same width, but its all a matter of preferrence.
Otherwise, you can also look into a slightly larger, foldable round table, that folds into half and goes against a wall when the 2nd half is not used.

Re: Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
I am in a house now but I lived in apartments for about 6 years and about 2 years or so with DH. In the time we lived together we had 2 dinner parties where we used a table. The first one we didn't even have a dining room - we just moved around furniture and used a folding table. When I moved to my second apartment with him we had a nice size dining room and bought a nice dining room set and we used it once for a sit down dinner. I knew I was going to be buying a house within the year though when I bought the dining room set so we bought somehting we would take to a house. In our apartment we had company a lot but never really a sit down dinner. I would buy what fits the room best....

We do lots of entertaining but we have a HUGE kitchen. It's 20X20 so we have a nice size table that fits 6. I think it's nice to have a table (even 4 chairs is nice) but that's just me.

Thanks ladies.I do want a table, but I did not think it was necessary to get one of those long rectangular tables , that might not fit into our dining area- just so that we can have room to put food in the middle of the table.

We had a dining room, we hardly EVER used it. so i tured that room into a computer room and put the table downstairs and got a bistro table for the kitchen. You can put a card table up when you have guests.

Re: Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
Get a table with leaves! That way on days you are not entertaining you can leave all the leaves out and on nights when you have a few couples over put them in.

I was going to suggest getting a table with leaves also. Now they make them so that the leaves are stored in the table!

Re: Furniture question for those who live in an apt.
a leaf is a good idea...although we have a med sized table...i am thinking of downgrading to a small glass circle...we don't entertain...lol...we had another couple over for dinner once ( on the medium sized table) and I still had to pull out 2 snack tables to put stuff on...
I think the smaller table will help open up our space a bit more...we have pushed our table back to the wall as it is to make room...and now it just collects junk
