What furniture stores (besides Ethan Allen) allow you to pick a piece and then pick from a ton of different fabrics (not just a few swatches like Fortunoff, JCPenney, etc)?

I think The Place lets you do that. We looked at couches there, but it was a while ago.

JCP online has a good selection... we got our bed frame, dining table/chairs and stuff from there. JCP the home store in lake grove is just like any other furniture place. most stuff was way over priced.
couches, jennifer convetiable - you can't beat the price.
the place is nice to get ideas by too much for me.
We got this table from JCP when it was 599 or 499. since then, they raised the price
JCP online has a good selection... we got our bed frame, dining table/chairs and stuff from there. JCP the home store in lake grove is just like any other furniture place. most stuff was way over priced.

well.. not a china cabinet but a server buffet .. matches the table with the pattern. once we get money, we will buy this also
We bought our furniture at Seigerman's and I loved their service. It was pricey, but not as bad as Ethan Allan, and totally worth the money.

Thanks all! I'll look into each of these - I really am just looking for a chair with natural and blue stripes and it is impossible to find (thus why I wanted a more custom route). Ethan Allen's chairs are a little too 'ritzy' looking for our taste (and their new casual line only comes in five swatches )

we ordered ALL of our upholstered furniture from ethan allen. they have a huge selection and a ton of fabric choices. the furniture we ordered is (IMO) far from 'ritzy'.
here are 2 pics of the upholstered furniture (2 pieces) that we ordered for the den. please note that the room is nowhere near completed.
another option is to try calico corners. they are probably comparable in price to ethan allen. nice selection of furnishings and a ton of fabric choices.
Believe it or not, try Lazy Boy. They have a VERY large selection of fabrics and you'd be surprised how many different styles of chairs they have now (even the ones with the coolers for your DH!)

Great furniture! You are right - Ethan Allen has a wide selection. There are actually two chairs we really like - but they are only offered in creme, blue, brown and green (and we wanted stripe). We actually have our couch selected from Ethan Allen - and are looking for a chair that goes!
I'll check out calico corners - they sound like they have a good selection :)

I got my couches from Seigerman and they weren't $$$$$, not Ethan Allen $$$$ at least ... they were on par with THE PLACE in terms of pricing. And they had over 200+ fabrics to choose from for our couches.

Found them - in Farmindale. I will have to drag FH there this weekend (he will be thrilled!) I wish they had some of their furniture on their website
