fussy single guest...please advise

fussy single guest...please advise

Through the grapevine I learned that one of my guests said that he would be offended if his invitation wasn't addressed as 'Mr. X and Guest'. The kicker is that he currently doesn't have a significant other, he just doesn't want it to be asumed that he can't/won't have one.

My issue isn't about the numbers (he can bring a guest if he wants), but rather with his attitude. Please advise with what you think should be done.

Thanks!

Im torn, In my head Im saying its not about the numbers so just invite with a guest. But I agree about his whole attitude. The way I feel is that if you really want him to be a part of your day and to enjoy it with you invite him with a guest. I think weddings get out of hand with the whole who is and who isnt invited and with or without a guest. I hate that people 'assume' they are or should be invited how they wish to be invited

Good Luck, I truly thing if you dont want the stress just invite him with a guest

I always believed that if you were inviting an adult, regardless of their dating status they always were invited with a guest.

Not saying I'm right, that is just how my family has always done it.

Good luck

I vote to ignore the horrible grapevine!

Dont get offended by something someone never even said to you! DH's family is super gossipy, and their vine has deeeeep roots.... I heard all sorts of cr@p, but ignored all of it. you have no idea what the guy meant, what his vocal inflections were, and how 'serious' the conversation was. It sounds like he had a purely speculative and theoretical conversation...

If you originally intened to send a + guest invitation (which sounds like you did), do it....

Forget what the fussy single guest said....If you can afford to invite someone who is single with a guest...then do it...if it can't be done...then don't...
After going through this...I have to say...people have to respect that weddings cost a lot of money...and sometimes you can't invite everyone you want....

Good Luck..

If you have the room & the $ for an extra person I would do it to keep peace in the family but if it is an inconvenience to you then don't invite the + 1.
We had such a long invite list we invited almost everyone that wasn't married or engaged single & I know some people weren't happy but we couldn't invite too many more then the room held.
My husbands cousin didn't come because she couldn't bring her new boyfriend. I felt bad, but she'll understand when she gets married.

Out of curiousity, were you planning on inviting him without a guest?

I wouldn't let his attitude bother me if I were you - it's actually a very common feeling! I have heard many people complain when they were invited solo - even though they were single and wouldn't have brought a guest most likely anyway.

I would wait. Your wedding is still a year away. I agree he has a crappy attitude about it, but there may be someone serious in his life next year, and then you would invite Mr. X and guest as long as your budget allows it....

I was only going to address it to him without & Guest (assuming he didn't have anyone by that time). When I was single and my friends knew I was single, I wasn't invited with '& guest'. In my opinion, I'd be more offended if i were single and my invitation read '& guest' because i'd feel like a loser who didn't have someone to bring to the wedding.

Since everyone is different, it's good to hear other's perspectives on this matter! Thanks ladies!

I feel that if I can afford to invite people with guest I will. But, in my family, usually you are only invited with guest if you are in a relationship.

Nowadays a lot people are inviting singles without dates, maybe he assumed this was going to happen and got upset.. I'd let it go and invite him with a guess, less stress on you!

step 1. ignore the grapevine. its twisted and knarly
step 2. do what YOU want to do
step 2a. if you're doubting step 2, check with an etiquette resource. i believe you are 'supposed' to invite adults over 18 with an escort.
step 3. ignore aforementioned resource if it doesn't work for you
step 4. just DON'T address any single women as MISS on the invite. that drove/ drives me nuts! yes i got an invitation about a month ago as an engaged 33 yr old woman that was addressed 'MISS' personal pet peeve of mine and Dumb i know :)

Step 5. stop thinking about it ... crack open a beer or a glass of wine and hang out with your lovie :)

Step 6: Colleen1117 will now stop making up theoretical steps to solve problems
