Future Brother in Law Trouble :(

Future Brother in Law Trouble :(

So when my now fiancé and I (Gary) first started dating, he lived in a house with his brother Brian). His brother and I got along great in the beginning. We are close to the same age, we would hang out all the time waiting for my fiancé to get home from work and just have a good time laughing together.
But the more serious Gary and I got relationship wise, the less Brian seemed to like me. I almost thought he was jealous of what we had or he was sad I was cutting into their time. But whatever the reason, it was totally nothing I did to make him hate me.
It kept getting worse and worse. For example, when we were all together with his parents, anything I would say, Brian would come down on me and try to embarrass me. At his sisters sweet 16 party he really threw me over the edge by just being an a****** telling me I will never be part of the family and nobody cares what I think, etc.
If I had done something to him to get this reaction I would at least understand but I never did anything to him. Even after we got engaged, he never ever congratulated his brother, even though he was asked to be the best man! When Gary confronted him about his behavior to me, he swore he was just 'concerned' that we were rushing into marriage because we were getting older (I am only 27 and we have been dating for 2 years, living together for over a year). And I felt like that was such a BS answer because his attitude towards me starting way before we got engaged. And now he started getting serious with his girlfriend (moved in after only 5 months of dating) and you would think he would change his attitude but he is still a jerk to me. If Gary EVER treated Brian’s girlfriend the way Brian does to me, I would kill him! But Gary would never do that, he isn’t a jerk.

It hurts me because my fiancé is the one who is hurting. He is close with his brother and it is so immature and unnecessary the way he is acting. I get along with EVERYONE else, all his friends and family, nobody has ever had anything bad to say about me. I am good to Gary, I love him deeply and will never hurt him so shouldn't his brother respect that? I need help with what to do. If I ask to talk to him he probably will never answer me. I thought of showing up at his house to talk but that is a little physco. We are less than 2 months from the wedding and I just want to get back to how we were but I also feel like I really shouldn't be bothering with him since he is the one who all of a sudden hated me after I did nothing. This is really killing me...Help what do I do!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for the novel but I really need to fix this!

I would definitely demand to have a sit down with him and clear the air...you don't want this hanging over your head on your wedding day. I'd text or call him letting him know you want to talk, and if he refuses, maybe have your FH set up something.

Sorry you're going through this

Im so sorry hun...that is horrible and i cant believe that he is doing that to you...does your FH know that this is really upsetting you?? I would ask your FH to sit down and talk to him about this.....or i would ask to speak with him to try to get this whole thing straighting out ..b/c know you are going to be apart of the family and if this is the way he will act ...u are always going to have problems and u dont want that ...trust me ...u need to get the base of the problem and see what is really going on with him.... now that he did move in with his GF maybe he will understand where u are coming from ....Good luck!!!!

That really stinks that you are going through this. He is probably learning how to adjust to the new relationship (thought it isnt really new).

You should sit down and speak with him yourself - man to woman. I would have your FH let him know that you want to talk so he isn't shocked when you speak to him, but talk to him face to face. Do not email, or text... no phone. Just sit down with him and tell him how you feel and find out how he feels.

Clearing the air will only make you feel better. You don't need this extra stress with all the other wedding planning stress on your shoulders... Good luck mama!

Re: Future Brother in Law Trouble :(

Sorry you are going through this- I am in a similar situation with my one of my future sister-in-laws. It sucks when you have done nothing wrong believe me I can relate. FSIL blow up at FH right around Christmas time claiming alot of nasty things about me & even saying I have changed him into a worse person. When FMIL spoke to her it seems she got jealous when me & FH started to date because she lost her drinking/bar buddy. It may be a similar situation with you guys-it sounds really stupid but your FBIL may be jealous.

In my situation there is no solving it FSIL said way too many hurtful wrong things & told alot of lies that she will never apologize for. I feel horrible for FH because he is stuck in the middle of it. I just try to keep my distance from her & it does effect the way the rest of the family treats me unfortunately. My advice to you sit down with FH & talk to him-maybe the two of you can sit down with his brother & find out where the issue started. I wish I could do this but it just won't work for me but I hope it will for you.

i would have FH talk to his brother and find out what the problem is. if FBIL won't tell FH, then i would just let things go before the wedding. with your date so close, i wouldn't start any huge family problems and just let things slide for now.
easier sad than done, however its the truth - you don't need everyone blaming you for starting something that could potenitally blow up big right before the wedding and you being made the culprit for tearing 2 brothers apart when it wasn't your fault to begin with. KWIM?

I would however, make sure that you either tell FH to see or read or something, a copy of FBIL's speech at the wedding - you don't want him bashing you or creating a schene because of his dislike of you on your most important day!
