I remember there were two guidance counselors who posted on here. I got my Masters in School Counseling three years ago. I have been having a difficult time finding a job. They are telling me I have no experience which is silly because I am just out of school and need a job to get experience. I don't know too many important contacts. What experience have you guys had? Thanks I appreciate your input!
I got my MA in counseling while I was teaching and never went into it - since I liked teaching...but decided to pursue it when I moved out of NY...
it took 7 months...but I'm starting tomorrow as a Drug-free and safe school coordinator...
most of the poisitions I interviewed for were filled by men (I looked up a few on the schools site to see the new counselor) and that is an issue in NY as well...over the entire nation...schools are looking for male counselors so that there is someone for the male students to talk to - if needed
also NYS had huge budget cuts and counselors are one of the first to be cut...

Re: Future Guidance counselors
Congratulations to you! Yay! I totally understand what you are saying about male counselors and have found that to be true.

Re: Future Guidance counselors
My district has always been backwards-- 95% of our counselors are women. In my school we do not have a single male counselor, psychologist or social worker. But 2 out of the 3 deans are male.

Re: Future Guidance counselors
Where did you go to school? Maybe you could go and speak with one of your old professors and see if they can help...
There are also 3 vacancy announcements on the NYC Dept of Ed page...
Hi everyone. I have been a school counselor for three years. I am working in the NYC public schools as an elementary counselor. I know its really hard to find a job. Don't give up. If you need any advice or info, FM me!
