we went to the town clerk for our marriage license today but I was very disappointed when we were told I couldn't use my maiden name as a middle name- I had to hyphenate

i think its because it is not considered as name change due to marriage.. a marriage only lets you change your last name.. making your maiden last name into your middle name is like changing your name completely i had to go to court and do the whole shindig..

Whattt are you serious?? Do you mean you replaced your actual middle name with your maiden name, and then added on your last name?? Or did you just want to have two middle names?? I'd like to keep my middle name, and then have my maiden name act as a second middle name. So in other words, I just want to add on my new last name to what my name currently is. This isn't allowed???

that's what i did, at the SS office. my full name is now Tina Marie Maiden Married. the SS office had no issue with it at all. my marriage cert shows i changed my last name, but i now have 2 middle names.
ETA: i think when you apply for your marriage license it strictly addresses your last name, nothing about your middle name. when you change your name at SS they should let you change it then w/out a problem.

My friend went through this. We went to the SS office for our new cards and they told her that.

I'm wondering if going to court is worth it.. how much of a difference will it be to just write both last names on legal documents?? In fact I was wondering if it may even be easier for keeping my maiden name at work.. But I was so depressed because I dont' have a middle name and I was thrilled to finally have one...oh well... If it is easier for work I'll just keep it hyphenated but never use it socially

when i went to the town clerk the person told me if you have a middle name...you can replace your current middle name with your maiden name and add your spouse's last name as your last name
Name Middle Maiden to Name Maiden New Last
if you don't already have a middle name (which is my situation)....i was told you had to do a legal name change through the court.
im not sure if there are ways around it...but girls have posted that u can just do this change at the ss office...but im not sure if they already have a marriage license that has Name Maiden New Last
