FYI Tipping - Repost from '08

I am actually really upset by this and I don't know if I was the only one in the dark about it...

Apparently, the 18-20% 'gratuity' that we are all paying THOUSANDS for doesn't even go to the staff. The servers, bartenders, cooks, etc dont get gratuity from us brides and grooms unless you go and hand them cash! That 18% (or whatever) is HOUSE MONEY. That gets used to pay the servers their $6/hour salary. This is what a person told me yesterday at a RH I was talking to. Your guests and you are more than welcome to tip the servers, bartenders, cooks, etc...but if no one does = NO TIP!

Just wanted to let you all know if you didnt already. I hope this makes sense.

Yes, it's more of a 'service charge'

At my RH, the tip you give the Maitre D was distributed amongst the waitstaff and bartenders.

Yup thats how it goes at most places.. you'll see that too when you look into booking limos!!

they say to give i believe $2 or $3 per person or whatever you feel appropriate as a tip to cover maitre'd and staff...

I used to work in a restaurant that did weddings and big parties and rarely ever got tips because everyone thought that 18% was our tip! I didnt even know that until I started working there...and neither did my family

Who wouldn't tip the bartender anyway? Meaning as a guest, I always throw a 20 down at the start of the night and tell them to remember me..>I can't say I have ever tipped a waiter though..

That is kind of sh*tty. I am going to ask my reception hall what they do...

This kind of pisses me off What about the pp maitre d fee . . . does that go directly to him/her?? And the same thing with limos the driver does not see any of that 20%???

The 20% gratuity for the limo driver goes to pay his wages, if you decide you want to tip on the day of, that is a 'tip'.

At our hall, the maitre d tipped out the bartenders and waitstaff. I'm sure our guests tipped the bartenders as well while they were getting drinks. We were going to tip them individually but, the maitre d told us she takes care of it.

When we booked our RH we asked this questions and were told that it does in fact get divided, if we choose to tip more that is our choice

thats nice. so baiscally we pay the salary of the waitresses/limo drivers and have to tip them on top of it. Kinda aggrivating knowing that.
My limo company said everything is included and i dont have to tip the drive its all together. I purposly asked like twice too and she said no both times. Wow this will add up to alot more $$$
