Gap between Ceremony and Reception

Anybody have any good suggestions on what to have guests do between the ceremony and reception... ceremony at 3:30, reception at 7... they are only 15 minutes apart! please help!! i would rather not have my mother host people at our house.

My MIL hosted guests (her family) for some pastries and such at the hotel we had rooms blocked in. Close family on my side went back to my mom's and aunts. Others went home/to the hotel and changed and got ready for reception. Others just made due (my co-workers said the past time in a local bookstore - all dressed up too!). Some skipped the church.

I have been in this situation and always found something to occupy my time. I feel most guests understand this and make due.

I went to a wedding with a timing gap like yours and they served light refreshments at the reception area in the church after the ceremony. It was very relaxing. The bride and groom hung out with us for a while and then left to do their photos at the botanical gardens. The other option may be having a longer ceremony (filling up the time with intersting readings and speeches) that starts at a slightly later time.

Hope this helps.....

thank you so much for both respsonses! we dont have any long distance out of towners, so we dont have any hotels booked. we were thinking of the church room. i just dont want my mother to have to worry about getting home and entertaining. i think she has enough stress!!

If you don't have any people from too far away I think people will go home to change after the church. I know that is what I usually do.

is there a bar nearby?

I have done this at weddings with long gaps..

we directed people to a bar at my sisters wedding...

it works out fine...even non drinkers can go in and socialize

There are many girls who have this problem. I am in the same siutation. People can entertain themselves. I have been to many weddings where I went back to the hotel to relax or went to a bar for a drink.

I am having a two day wedding so I am informing my guests via word of mouth of stuff to do in NY. People can make plans accordingly. I have not heard much complaints so faR!!

I have the same situation and am directing them to hang out in the lounge at the hotel.

Re: Gap between Ceremony and Reception

people went back to my moms, but she didn't want to worry about entertaining either. So she had her friends daughter (the friend was invited to the wedding, but the daughter wasn't) be at the house setting up while we were at the ceremony, (putting out cookies, starting coffee, stuff like that) and she stayed a few hours playing hostess and cleaned up too.

That way my parents could stay for however long at the church (taking pics, etc) without feeling like they had to rush home and mom didn't have to play hostess since she had someone doing that. I think she paid her $25-50 or so and bought her a little gift to thank her. Her mom didn't want her taking any money but my mom insisted. It worked out great.
