Garden of Eden- the rip off and how I fooled them!

So, I saw a recipe in a magazine that I really wanted to try. It's Indian inspired and required chutney. I couldn’t find it in my area so I went to Garden of Eden on 23rd street to see if they have it. They did, for $6.99 a 2.5 oz jar!!! Now I know there is no way a tiny jar of chutney can cost that much!

There are some so-called'exclusive' and 'health conscious' food shops in the City that are just beyond obnoxious! How can you charge such ridiculous prices! And the worst this is: people buy it! They were also selling some generic pasta souce that I buy in my local supermarket for $1.49. They had it 'On Sale' for $2.99! W T F! I was floored!

So, anyway, I went to Jackson Height where I used to live some years ago. There is a very large Indian community in that area and they have great ethnic food stores. I bought 3 jars of different kind Chutney and 4 large packs of great spices - all for $11! HA! Hee hee hee!

I look forward to making some Chicken Tikka Masala! And Chicken Curry! And may be even Chicken in Spicy Yogurt !

That's the difference between Jackson Heights & Midtown Manhattan rents.

I am glad you found what you needed!!

Good for you!! Trader Joe's has chutney too.

I love Indian food!! Good luck with your recipes, let me know if you ever want to swap someday!

The cosmetic industry does the same thing. They make you think that just because a product is expensive, it must be good. Wrong!

No wonder Balducci's went out of business. Sometimes I wonder who shopes there (I mean like really shops, not buying a treat here and there)

you can make your own chutney too!

Alot of regular supermarkets will have a certain ethnic food if the population lives there. I know of a supermarket with English and Irish Imports and one with a lot of hispanic foods.
