Garter belts...Does anybody still do this tradition?

Garter belts...Does anybody still do this tradition?

I'm undecided whether or not to do the taking off of the garter belt. Do people still do this at weddings or is it fading out? I need some feedback. Thanks...

I'm wearing my mom's garter for tradition, but not taking it off. I only saw it done at 1 out of the 10 weddings i went to this year.

However, I'm also not tossing my bouquet, and I've seen that done at most of the weddings I've been to. I guess I'm just not into the traditional ceremonial things during the reception. It think it's totally your call!

Just my observations ;-)

It depends...

usually on your guests...will there be a lot of young people? this might be something you want to do...if there will not be it may be awkward for the people who have to go out...

You could give the bouquet away to a grandmother or aunt or do the anniversary dance...the couple married the longest (eliminate couples dancing married less than 5 years, 10, 20, 30 etc..) gets the bouquet.

Although it is completely up to you...my cousin married someone from Sweden and it was not something that they do there and he did not feel comfortable with it...so they did only the bouquet.

I will probably do both, but only b/c there will be a lot of single people there (my sister met a boyfriend that way...;) )

I agree....it is really up to you

I am not doing either. I don't have a lot of single friends. I think the garter thing can also get very tacky if it is not discussed ahead of time. When the DJ/band plays strip type music and then the guys have a young boy catch I think that goes to far. Especially if you have the young boy put the garter on the women who caught the flowers. I have seen that happen a few times and always think it is very unfair to the adult women and very embarrasing for the boy.

Your choice

The embarassment could go both ways. Think of how a young girl might feel, thinking she`s going up there just to catch the bouquet, only to find out what comes next! I remember when I was young and went to weddings .. I was eager to want to catch the bouquet, then relieved when I didn`t after I would remember the part about the garter as the guys lined up. It took me a couple of weddings to remember how the whole thing 'traditionally' worked. :)

There were several reasons why we chose not to do it at our wedding, but there was no indecision on my part. I just really didn`t want it as part of my day.

Instead, we did the anniversary dance, as already mentioned. It worked out great. We made one small adjustment though. We had all couples come out onto the dance floor, then first knocked out those who weren`t married yet.

I thought for a split second that maybe doing this dance would be unfair to those single guests attending, but, then I thought, this is a wedding, and I want to honor the couple who has survived together for years, for better or worse. To me, that had a special significance for our day.

We`ve been to alot of weddings over the past two years, and I haven`t seen it done at any of them. But, like everyone`s saying, it really is your choice.

My fiance insists on doing it...

I'm not sure if I want to. I will definitely be embarrased. I feel like we should because it is tradition. But on the other hand, I'm a shy person to begin with. He's an old-fashioned, traditional kind of guy. Though I actually might of convinced him to take pictures before the ceremony! I don't know if I want to do that, but I want to enjoy my reception, and not spend the whole time taking pictures.

I vote anniversary dance!

I had never heard of this, but my friend just married last month and she did it. I thought it was wonderful. I love the idea of having everyone dance at first, and eliminating the single people first - it gets everyone involved!! As people have mentioned, a lot has to do with the age of your guests. Good luck!

My opinion

Out of the 6 weddings I have been to this year, I have only seen the garter toss once! It took up a lot of time and it took away the focus from the bride and groom. I hope that I don't offend anyone, but I thought it was kind of tacky too. Plus the girl who had the garter put on her leg seemed really embarrassed.

My opinion

We did it at my wedding. My husband is English and half the guests came from abroad. It`s not a tradition they have ever seen, so I wanted to expose them to some American wedding tradition.

It was so funny to watch my older aunt catch the bouquet and a young English man catch the garter. He had no idea what it meant to catch it. Someone told him that he had to slip it on her leg using only his teeth! The entire reception hall were on their bellies laughing! I would definitely suggest doing it.

I'm going to do it

It seems like I am out numbered on this, but I think it is a tradition, and one I wouldn't skip. I've caught the bouquet a few times and it can be a lot of fum if done right. And most of the time I have found it is not the shy ones that catch it!

if a kid catches...

this happened to my 13 year old cousin when I was younger...she DOVE for the bouquet...b/c she wanted the flowers!!! Well then a much older cousin caught the garter...talk about awkward!! Instead they chose a bride's friend and she substituted my cousin's spot and got to keep the bouquet...

I don't know how I feel about it...so many people meet at weddings (my parents) and my sister dated someone for 2 years (she caught bouquet and bf caught garter)
